Gul Scorpion National Championship at Llandudno Sailing Club - Day 3

Another sunny day with light to moderate winds. The race team managed to get both championship races and the crews' race completed. Full courses were the order of the day giving the fleet plenty of chance to settle down to some serious racing.

Race 5 was just about ready to go when the wind gods teased the race team by changing direction 50 degrees five minutes before the start sequence. A nifty movement of the windward mark gave a true first beat and set the tone for the rest of the day.

Unusually, race 5 and 6 had the same results for the top three: 1st Tom Gillard & Rachael Rhodes, 2nd Andy McKee & Steve Graham, 3rd Pete Grey & Richard Pepperdine.

With eleven boats taking part, the crews' race was a very close affair with probably the finish of the week. Three boats rounded the last mark together with a 100m dash to the finish line. Two out of three had 'new' crew problems taking the spinnaker down (Chris Turner and Dave Elston) giving the opportunity for Tom Daniels/Chris Massey to pass the finish line first.

Racing Sailboats, an institution right at the very heart of the UK dinghy sailing scene It is a sad fact of life that the sailors who were drivers at the heart of the so called 'golden era' of dinghy racing are getting older, but their ability to get together for an afternoon of fun and laughter is as strong as ever.
