Supernova open meeting at Carsington Sailing Club

by Tom Baldwin 7 Jun 2019 12:12 PDT 2 June 2019

After some light wind sailing at Swarkstone the day before 24 boats travelled to Carsington to join the three local boats. The forecast was for more wind and proved to be correct. There was a good F4 for the SW coming over the dam and straight down the large sailing area.

There was a slight postponement to race 1 after the committee boat dragged its mooring; most helms were relieved that the first beat wasn't actually going to be half a mile long!

At the front of the fleet in race 1 it was Cliff Milliner from Cotswold Sailing Club and Alex Collins from Bolton Sailing Club out in front by a long way. Cliff took line honours. Third was Gavin Young also from Cotswold.

In race 2 it was Cliff out in front again but much closer this time behind him with close racing and lots of position changes. Cliff held on for the win followed by class newcomer Chris Bownes from Bartley Sailing Club in second then Steve Hawley from Bartley in third.

It was a long beat back to the club with dark rain clouds gathering for a welcome lunch.

After lunch race 3 saw the biggest wind of the day and some cracking reaches. Cliff delivered the final bullet (can he repeat this performance at the nationals?) with Alex in for second and Steve in third. By coincidence the third race result was the same as the overall podium for the day.

Just 1 point split third to fifth places so it was super close!

Thanks to all at Carsington SC especially race team Henry Wright, Liz and Keith Appleby and mark layers/safety Dick Dalton and Dave Currier.

The Supernovas move on to nearby Attenborough in two weeks' time.

Overall Results:

1st Veteran was the 'quick old guy at the front' Tony Critchley from Bolton
1st Master was 'Mr Consistency' Mike Gibson from Bartley
