The 707 Fleet was the largest at the Scottish Series with sixteen entrants in this one-design, ultra-competitive boat. The weather conditions ranged from breathless to blowy, suiting different crews over the days and meaning many crews got to return home with some glassware.

The top six boats swapped places constantly with the mid-fleeters of course having their moments of glory and leading at some point, but constancy pays off and Seaword eventually triumphed in Tarbert.

With seven out of the scheduled eleven races successfully completed, Seaword did not dominate: which indicates that the range and quality of skills in the fleet is improving. Even Olympic sailor Luke Patience and team struggled to fend off very tactical sailing and fierce, but friendly, competition!

The Class Association-owned boat, Miss Moneypenny, was used by Hamish Crow from Cardiff, owner of 707 Three Little Pigs based there. He gathered a capable team together of old sailing mates and their results were outstanding, coming second overall! The class-owned boat is a keeper and we expect great things from any team using her! Great to see was the Angus family team on Pocket Battleship of the two teenage boys Gregor and Rory, mum Lorna and dad Robin. They were seen as a threat as are keen dinghy sailors and have excellent tactics, and we know the parents are as excited in the competition as the boys.

For a mere £5000 you get the hull-to-hull competition without chequebook sailing, and on top of this you become part of a no-squabbling and friendly group of enthusiastic sailors. It now seems that we are attracting people from other classes and IRC divisions fed up with the expense and lottery of handicap racing. This is sailing at its most fun. For more information on boats for sale, or chartering the class association boat for an event, find us on Facebook or get in touch with the committee.

Next up for the 707 fleet is the 'June Forth Event' at Port Edgar YC 89 June. The Hartlepool Marina 707 Nationals, hosted at Tees & Hartlepool YC, take place 2730 June.
