RS Tera Start of Season Championships at Northampton Sailing Club

by Alice Davis & Will James 2 May 2019 02:42 PDT

Pro Fleet - by Alice Davis

We arrived at Northampton SC on Saturday morning for the Start of Seasons only to discover the crazy 50 knot forecast was true! After an hour's postponement the race officer Neil Barford decided to can the racing for the day leaving us to go and do other things with our friends. However because we didn't get any racing in on Saturday, it meant a VERY early start on the Sunday launching at 8:30 in the morning with the aims of getting six races in that day.

The first race was very close with me rounding the last mark in first however due to all the sports starting, I got mixed up with them and Teddy took the win, with me in second and Peter in third. The second race was very shifty and difficult and after some close racing at the front, Esme stole the win from Teddy in second and Max in third. In the third race, Teddy yet again took another win, I was in second, and Oliver was in 3rd after some very close racing in shifty conditions. The last race before lunch was again difficult to sail and Lucas won, with Oliver in second and me close behind in third.

We then went in for lunch for a while before going out again to get another three races in. In the fifth race, I picked the shifts really well and on the last lap I had a massive lead however close to the windward mark, my traveller snapped and I then had to try to sail the rest of the race holding the mainsheet from the boom which was very tiring! Nevertheless, I managed to finish the race with a win followed by Oliver again in second and Max in third.

In the sixth race, after I'd managed to kind of fix my traveller with a piece of rope in my buoyancy aid, I gained into second but then lost on the upwind to Max meaning Lucas took another win, Max in second and me in third. We were all surprised that there was a last race and were quite tired nevertheless, me, Oliver and Teddy battled it out for the decider of who would win the event and overall, in the last race, I won after a nerve-racking last downwind, and Oliver closely followed with Teddy in third.

I am really to have pleased to have won as I was consistent the whole way through and it was close racing. Thank you to all the competitors for making it such a good event!!

Sport Fleet - by Will James

50 RS Tera sport sailing boats arrived from all around the country to race at Northampton Sailing Club for the RS Tera Start of Seasons Championship. The strong winds forecast for the weekend made the chance of sailing getting cancelled on Saturday a possibility. Sure enough the winds built but with some really big gusts of up to 40 plus knots, the race officer made the sensible decision and after a one hour postponement to cancel all racing for the day.

SI's were changed to allow an earlier start on the Sunday and a later finish. Race one got under way with a small start line, lots of pushing with some very enthusiastic sailors caused the inevitable general recall. The second start was under a black flag and unfortunately eight boats were black flagged. The winner of that race was William James (2671) second Toby Hatsell (1906) third Fflur Pierce (1922).

Race two was a clear start with another first for William James (2671) closely followed by Tristan Ahleid (1874) and in third place Fflur Pierce (1922). Race three was all clear again and the winner was Freddie Sunderland (3575) second Finlay Lomas-Clarke (2226) third Felix Stewart (2969). The fourth race was an all clear again and the winner being Finlay Lomas-Clarke (2226) second Oliver Stratton-Brown (2392) third Freddie Sunderland (3575).

The fifth race was again an all clear with Felix Stewart (2969) being the winner, second was Olly Peters (228) third William James (2671). The sixth race was again an all clear with William James (2671) being the winner, second was Olly Peters (228) third William Bailey (3159). The seventh and finally race was an all clear and saw William James (2671) win the final race, second Olly Peters (228) and third William Bailey (3159).

Overall the final standings were Freddie Sunderland (3575) third the Fflur Pierce (1922) second and William James (2671) first. It was an absolutely great weekend and everyone was ready to go to Rutland Sailing Club for the RS Tera Inland Championship.

Frensham wins the club prize

With an impressive thirteen members taking part, Frensham Pond Sailing Club won the club prize. Members Oliver Stratton-Brown took fourth place in the sport fleet and Mark Soars took first place in the regatta fleet, an amazing result considering it was his first ever championship event! Credit to all the children who took part and to the coaches at the club for inspiring the children to take part and strive to win!
