The team of Michael Quirk and Tim Needham currently sit atop the leaderboard as day one of the 2019 505 Euro Cup kick off at Yacht Club de Cannes. After a postponement to allow the gusty 20-30 knot wind to moderate, Olivier de Turckhein, PRO from the Yacht Club de Cannes did well to get three races in the shifty, off shore and decaying breeze. Places changed regularly and racing was extremely close.
In what has become one of the highlights on the annual 505 calendar, the Euro Cup is a four-event series that takes place across France, Italy, Germany and the UK. There is a winner determined at each event as well as an overall series winner based on cumulative scores from three of the four regattas.
Cannes is the first stop on the 2019 circuit and has already proven to be great place to kick off the series.
Top five after day 1:
1. QUIRK, NEEDHAM 6 pts
2. HAMLIN, NELSON 7 pts
3. PINNELL, CLARK 8 pts
4. HUNGER, JESS 13 pts
5. GILLARD, EDWARS 25 pts
The highly competitive field also includes past World Champions Jan Saugmann (DEN) and Mark Upton Brown, (UK).
Racing continues on 20 April with three races, starting with the first race at 11:00 am.
