International Melges 20 World Championship at Coconut Grove Sailing Club - Day 2

by Hannah Noll 5 Apr 15:50 PDT 4 -7 April 2019

The Melges 20 fleet is five races and three socials into the Melges 20 World Championship. Consistent racing has been paying off for Robert Hughess Heartbreaker who leads the pack at the halfway point, along with Manu Weiller and Federico Michetti.

Sailors hail from nine different countries across four continents. After racing, everyone swaps stories and shares knowledge on the docks and at the social events at the Coconut Grove Sailing Club.

Todays race wins went to Vladimir Prosikhins Nika and Daniel Thielmans Kuai. Overnight leader Daniel Thielman and his team of Rayleen Thielman, Jeremy Wilmot, and Alec Anderson have won three of the five races so far, but one mid-fleet finish today was enough to knock them to the second position today.

The Melges 20 fleet boasts incredible, highly organized racing around the globe, and 2019 is no exception. The Melges World Leagues North American Division has welcomed new owners to the class this year and is fully energized for the upcoming 2019-2020 Miami Winter Series now in its 11th year. Melges 20 Worlds will be in North America again in 2021. Before next years winter series kicks off, sailors will head to Europe for a summer circuit of great Melges World League racing across six events organized by Melges Europe. The MWL Asian Division is in full action in Japan with regular racing and five sanctioned regattas organized by Melges Japan on a backdrop of Mount Fuji. I wish I wouldve raced in Japan much sooner, said Rhonda Joyce of the Toronto Melges 20 fleet. Its about the people; they made us feel very special and welcome. I cant wait to go back.

Melges 20 World Championship racing continues the next two days.
