Race five of the Lymington Town Sailing Club Pennyfarthing Homes Solent Circuit on Sunday 4th November was sponsored by Caldwells Estate Agents. By way of a change from the previous four weeks of northerly winds, competitors were greeted by a solid southerly breeze, steady drizzle and limited visibility.
With a strong ebb tide flowing the race committee set a short windward leg out in to the Solent, followed by a run back to the mainland shore and close reach to the east for classes one, two and three.
Class One for boats sailing under IRC and Class Two, for Lymington Adjusted Handicap boats sailed the same course with a series of windward / leeward legs across the Solent. William Newton J105, Jelly Baby, dominated Class One to take line honours and first place on corrected time. David Gough and crew on board Elan 333, Aventura, were second and Bob and John Bakers J97, Jaywalkers was third. LAH Class 1 had their course shortened at Mark 4, on the island shore to avoid the long slow run back to the main land. Stuart Duffin, sailing Flying Boat, also took the double of line honours and first on corrected time, followed by Allan Hill's J30, Colleen and Tim Gale's Hanse 370 in third.
LAH Class 2 had a shorter course with a windward leeward leg across the Solent and back. Robert Youngs Dehler 28 OK Yah was first on corrected time, Unity, Richard Truscott's Westerly Konsort in second and Alex Grabau's Beneteau 38s5 in third. The J80's and Folkboats sailed a shorter course using the Pennyfarthing Windward mark and Harken leeward mark on a windward leeward course.
The J80s sailed two races with Chris and Hannah Neve's No Regrets sailing consistently to take wins in both races. Toby Collyer and crew on board Traffic Jam were second in race one with Andrew Hurst's Fuducial in Third. Liam Willis sailing Dark n Stormy II was second in race two with Collyer and crew in third.
The Folkboats enjoyed their usual tight racing around three laps of a windward leeward course. Chris Hills' Padfoot took the win ahead of Julian and Clare Sowry's Mistral and Simon Flacks Strelende. Julian Caldwell of Caldwells Estate Agents presented the Champagne bottle prizes at the daily prizegiving in the LTSC Solent Room.Race six of the series takes place on Sunday 11th November. Entries for single races are still being accepted through the LTSC Sailing Office.
