Karl Kwok, Beau Geste, and a Hainan record

Karl Kwok has led an illustrious business career that has taken him to the top of some of Hong Kong's largest companies, but many of the skills he uses were honed on a boat. On Thursday he set off to break the Hong Kong to Hainan record aboard his MOD70 trimaran, Beau Geste.

"When you are yacht racing you really have to think about management," he says. "Management of personnel, management of personalities, management of logistics. It is not much different [from the board room]." Kwok adds that you have to be in tune with the team so you can see when crew members are feeling down or angry. "Changing environments can be stressful," he said. "But these guys are professionals; they are not going to lose their temper. But you have to be aware of what they are feeling. You know, it's like in work, you are not going to lose your temper with your boss!"

Karl Kwok has taken many boardroom lessons to sailing - and sailing lessons to the board room. Empathy helps the teams tick, but one time he employed a more basic tactic: "I did use a business trick one time, but a long time ago," he joked. "I said, if we win this one you all get a bonus - and we won."

Once each race is over, Kwok and his boat captain, Gavin Brady, have a meeting and conduct appraisals on each crew member so that they can better learn to manage them, and so the crew themselves can improve. There is safety to consider too and Kwok has to comply with regulations, just as with his two listed companies – Wing On Company International and Tai Cheung Holdings – where he is CEO and Director respectively.

"Everything adds together and in some sense it is like work," he says. "But on the other hand this is the only game in town that the return on capital is not considered!" Given the wealth of lessons available on board, Kwok thinks children would benefit from learning to sail. "Some of these people [the sailors] have finished high school, they haven't gone to university but they've had vigorous training and gone into business," he said. "Typical Hong Kong parents wouldn't let you do that. You have to study first!"

The Hong Kong to Hainan Race started on Thursday morning, with the leaders expected to finish the 390nm leg to Sanya early on Friday morning. Kwok spoke before the race at the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club about his plans to set the record. "This boat's whole aim is to break records," he said. "I thought; if I don't establish a record, someone else will, and I think it should be a local boy."

There will be a following wind, the perfect conditions for sailing a multihull racing boat. But Kwok is conscious not to push it too hard and risk flipping the boat. The MOD70 trimaran can reach speeds of well over 30 knots, but pushing the boat must be balanced with risk. Multihulls are very fast, but the MOD70 in particular has proved susceptible to capsize, or pitch poling – when it rides a wave so fast its bow ploughs into the wave in front and it flips end over front. Beau Geste has never flipped.

"It depends on the skill of the crew," Kwok said. "But when these boats flip, it is not even human error - it is human nature. When another boat [a competitor] is right there, you keep pushing and pushing." And there is likely to be another boat right there as Kwok has stiff competition in the form of the new SHK Scallywag Fuku ORMA60 trimaran. It is the first time the two catamarans have raced against each other. (Ed. Unfortunately Scallywag broke a foil some 90nm from Hong Kong and was obliged to retire hurt).

Both boats can reach speeds over 30 knots, but Kwok thinks the night racing will be the difference. "Day time and night time racing are totally different. If you manage to stay on pace in the dark you are probably way ahead of the others," Kwok said.

The Scallywag brand is famous after one of its other boats competed in the Volvo Ocean Race, a round the world trip, which saw them lose a crew member overboard. That race, the VOR, was full of drama, including the death of a Hong Kong fisherman when Vestas – an American boat – collided with a fishing boat as it entered the harbour at night. "In Hong Kong you have races that go through a bunch of islands – it can be scary," Kwok said. "You look at the hills and they are very tall. It's dark. And there are lots and lots of fishing boats. With lights around, it can affect the helmsman's eyes and it can take time to get good night vision." He added that fishing boats can be a hazard, and sometimes string nets between two boats so you have to guess what they are doing. Kwok said: "That Volvo boat that hit a fishing boat - everyone knows it is very hard to see these boats when you are going very fast, and very often they are unlit."
