The RYA Eric Twiname Team Racing Championship ended with a fast and frantic day of racing to crown the junior and youth champions.

After two days of contrasting weather, Rugby School claimed the title of youth champions racing in the Firefly while Hollowell/Shustoke took the junior honours in the RS Feva.

With a challenging start to the two day event at Oxford Sailing Club in which only three races could be completed on the opening day, the young sailors more than made up for it on day two.

The 250 sailors completed over 230 races on a very wet and cold Sunday at Farmoor Reservoir with both the youth and junior competitions coming down to a nailbiting winner takes all final race.

From the 51 school and club teams from around the country, Rugby School edged out Sevenoaks Red 2-1 in the youth final after coming through semi-final wins against Sevenoaks White and OTRA Red respectively.

OTRA Red went on to win the petit final to take third place.

The junior final also ended in a 2-1 scoreline as Hollowell/Shustoke held off the battling Hayling Island.

Rutland Gold took third with a 2-0 win over Royal Hospital School in the petit final.

RYA Event Director Olivia Risk said: “It was a tough start to the event with almost no racing on the first day, but that didn’t stop anyone.

“The race committee and volunteers did an amazing job to get through a lot of racing and the sailors just took everything in their stride.

“It’s been another great event with a lot of interest from a lot of clubs and schools. With the support of the Eric Twiname Trust, Oxford Sailing Club and all the volunteers we can’t wait to come back next year and do it all again.”

Other prizes from the event included first club for Hollowell/Shustoke in the junior and West Oxfordshire in the youth, first school for Royal Hospital in the junior and Rugby in the youth and first class association for Tera Prodigy in the junior and OTRA Red in the youth.
