Volvo Gill Optimist Late Summer Championship at Poole Yacht Club

The Volvo Gill Optimist Late Summer Championship saw 180 sailors hosted by Poole Yacht Club and competing on the stunning waters of the world's second largest natural harbour. Internationally-renowned race officer Stuart Childerley ran six efficient races over a weekend of mostly light south to south-easterly winds from the direction of Brownsea Island; tricky beats put a premium on good starting, tide-awareness and tactics.

Despite having a broken arm, Santiago Sesto-Cosby from the Royal Lymington Yacht Club sailed a great series to count four race wins and a second for overall victory, while club mate Tabitha Davies finished both first junior girl and first girl overall.

The class was honoured to have a very special guest on the Sunday. Jon Wakefield, Managing Director of long-term class sponsor Volvo Car UK, handed out the trophies at the prizegiving after very much enjoying getting out on the water to see the last race. "I've not seen a race of that scale before so it was magnificent to see, and the dedication of the participants was epic actually, really wonderful," he said. "We've been good friends to the sailing community for a long time now. Our relationship with the RYA goes back a good 20 years now, and globally we have the association with the Ocean Race, but it all has to start somewhere, so for me I think it's meaningful that we can get really involved with the youngsters at grassroots level and help to promote the sport through the up and coming stars of tomorrow. We have helped some of the big names in sailing come all the way up through from the Optimist class so it's really inspiring to see these youngsters, and who knows which one's the star of the future that was racing today.

"I'm very impressed by not just the effort that's gone into the competitive sailing, their ability and their enthusiasm, but also the whole entourage that they have to bring with them and the dedication to the sport that starts with getting the boat out the garage in the morning, getting it on a trailer, getting it rigged and on the water, and being prepared - that level of determination. Not everyone's going to be a winner but for me, just to see these sailors out there is truly inspiring."

Also on hand to chat with the sailors were two members of the British Sailing Team: 49er sailor Chris Taylor, and Laser sailor Sam Whaley, who popped over from his home club at Swanage to help out with trolleys and welcome sailors ashore at the end of the regatta. Sam, who came into the sport later than most, started sailing at the age of around 13 and progressed directly through the Laser ranks. Asked for his impressions of the Optimist fleet, he said: "It's really amazing, the whole set up, and it's pretty cool having 180 Oppie sailors here. It's been lovely weather and conditions and an ideal venue for them to learn and race in. Everyone seems happy and smiley!"

The event was one of three ranking events for the Optimist class, with two to count for the final 2018 ranking for sailors, which will determine RYA and class national squad places.

Giving a top tip for the sailors, having seen the size of the fleet, Sam added: "Just practise your starts until you're the best starter in the world, because if you're the best at starting then it makes life easy and simple!"

With results now in for the Volvo Gill Inland and Late Summer Championship events, the final ranker of the year, the End of Season Championship, will take place at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy over the weekend of 6-7 October 2018.
