The ONE Bassenthwaite Lake Sailing Week - First Weekend

As usual a four race series kick started the nine day Regatta. It was warm throughout the weekend and mainly sunny but winds were consistently light; so much so that there was a two hour delay on Sunday morning before a line could be laid.

There were 133 entrants from as far afield as Loch Venacher in the north and Ely in the south. They were divided into eleven fleets including the Graduates who were holding their own class championships during the first weekend series.

Class and Trophy Winners were Dave & Jackie Gebhard (Tynemouth) in the Fast Handicap Fleet sailing their RS400, the Flying Fifteen of Steve Goacher / Tim Harper (Royal Windermere), the GP14 of Paul & Vicky Bowmer and the RS200 of Phil & Naomi Smith (both Bass), and Ed Thomas (Pilkingtons) in the Medium Handicap Fleet sailing a Phantom.

The Graduate Championship was won on last race by Ben & Gabe Hall (West Lancs) from Chris & Chloe Parker (Southport). The Enterprise class win went to Alan Baker & Thea Armstrong (Tynemouth) and the Solos to Tim Hand (Swarkestone) also on last race from Luke Shaw (Budworth).

The Slow Handicap Fleet had 4 boats all on 6 points and with a win each! The Vision of Ant Woodyear / Jo van Lechterop (Bass) took the Trophy from the 2.4 of Adam Billany (Derwent), the Wanderer of Amica Hopkins / Bernard Taylor (Swarkestone) and the Streaker of Guy Wheeler (South Windermere).

Graham & Sebastian Vials (Derwent) crewed the first Mirror winning the Mirror/Topper/Tera grouping.

Being on the Lead Boat for Saturday's second race gave an insight into how things should be done. The immaculate wooden Fifteen 617 of Graham & Alistair Lamond took the class lead from the start but they soon dropped down the fleet as the more modern boats got into their strides. But what was this? The past World Champion only fourth! Then it changed in a flash. Goacher / Harper went wide at the kite gybe mark and cut inside the squabbling lead trio ending up to windward of their remaining rival. Yes, they were luffed so it was kite down – kite up and away in the lead. All within twenty boat lengths!
