With a very biased pin end for the J80s and a strong flood tide there was plenty of action and a few raised voices!
It was a quick tack onto port and out into the strongest tide that paid dividends on the beat to J. Purple Haze, Checkmate, Fiducial, No Regrets and Megstar on their first outing out this year rounded in very close proximity but those that gybe-set towards the shore soon came out ahead. Checkmate led No Regrets and Fiducial until they gybed out to early for 'Yacht Haven' and let No Regrets through who then maintained their lead to the finish after another circuit. It was very close behind with Checkmate just holding off Traffic Jam who came through to take 3rd.
With a flood tide running and the wind in the East the start for the IRC 1 fleet saw a scramble for the pin end of the line. Islay (Richard Down) and Jaywalker (Bob Baker) crossed the line on Port tack ahead of the fleet, on the way to the first mark at Zwerver, and then a reach out to Solent Bank. The long run down to the Lymington Bank buoy saw the fleet split, with boats going inshore to minimise the adverse tide, and others led by Boomerang (Ray Crouch) opting to stay mid-Solent on the direct line to the mark. Boomerang's choice paid off as she climbed into a good 2nd behind the eventual winner Fidelitas (Mark Broadway).
The battle for 3rd saw three boats cross the line covered by just 15secs, but it was Jaywalker (Bob Baker) who took the place on adjusted time.
