Blithfield Sailing Club in Staffordshire has purchased four new optimist training dinghies to add to its club boat fleet. They are available free to use during training sessions and racing, allowing those without their own boats to take up the sport.
The boats are 'Sailqubes', designed by Jo Richards and supplied by Xtremity. these were chosen as their self draining hulls make them perfect for training, but their high quality mean they can also be used as an introduction to racing.
Principle of Training Tim Male commented, "Adding smaller boats to our fleet will allow our juniors from age six to get on the water more frequently, in a manageable and stable boat."
Commodore Paul Hollis added, "This is part of a number of initiatives at Blithfield focused upon increasing the participation levels in the sport, starting with the next generation but also ensuring that we have an attractive programme of training and racing for all ages and all abilities."
Training at Blithfield is run by RYA trained instructors with regular low cost sessions throughout the year with junior membership only £42. The new club boats are proving very popular, which has been reflected in an increased demand for training courses.
