Day 1 of the 14 nationals in Exe Sailing Club saw the fleet greeted with sunshine and a shifty offshore breeze from 6-14kts.
The form boats leading into the regatta were: Neale Jones and Ed Fitzgerald winning almost all regattas since buying the World Championship winning boat Scrumpet, Andy and Tom Partington winning the last open meeting having worked their immaculate B6 up over the last 2 years and finally Douglas Pattison and Mark Tait in Marilyn who have not finished a race outside the top 3 all season.
In Race 1, Neale Jones and Ed Fitzgerald lead the fleet off the line showing good speed. A right shift brought Dan Holman and Damian Ash through into the lead at mark 1 which they held down the 1st run with a tight pack of boats trading places behind. Andy Shaw and Rob Struckett tacked early at the leeward mark and took advantage of a left shift to jump from 5th to 1st. Over the course of the last lap Neale Jones and Ed Fitzgerald pulled through to a commanding lead. Behind them a close battle ensued with 5 boats changing places over the lap with Douglas Pattison and Mark Tait coming through to take the 3rd on the final mark.
Race 2 started in single wiring conditions with the fleet splitting in search of breeze. As the breeze reloaded from the right Neale Jones and Ed FitzGerald took control and lead the fleet into the windward mark followed by Shaw and Struckett. Archie Massey and Harvey Hillary split from the lead group at the leeward mark, tacking back into a left shift which which enabled them to cross the fleet to take the lead, whilst Fitzgerald and Jones wallowed out right. Holman and Ash had pushed further left to round 2nd, leaving the two Holman designed boats pulling clear of the fleet. On the final lap, Massey and Hillary worked the middle to extend their lead, whilst the frequent shifts allowed multiple place changes further down with Shaw and Struckett taking 2nd and with that the day, with a 2,2.
