The first 2000 class Millennium Series event took place over the weekend of 21/22 April at Rutland Sailing Club.
This event was part of the large multi-class RS Sprints events - so there were over 85 boats out on the water in the wonderfully arranged sunshine. 10 races per class, each approximately 30 minutes long resulting in lots of winners! Some of the "winners" from the 2000 class included:
- Jasper Barnham and Freya Pembery: who were in the lead at the end of the first day, but Jasper couldn't sail on the Sunday.
- Guy and Julie Boswell: for leading the fleet around the first mark in the final Race.
- The Tylecote boat: which obtained the fewest points over the weekend - but with two different helms.
- Steve Tylecote and Freya Pembery: for winning the races on the Sunday.
- Freya Pembery for winning 8 out of the 10 races, and the 2000 Class Youth prize.
- Iain and Sarah Yardley: for the swimming prize, after capsizing on the beat in one of the big shifts.
- Chris and Gill Jordan: for luffing the fleet over the line and causing the only General Recall of the weekend.
- Richard and Eilidh Harvey: who lost his mast 10 minutes before the first race on Sunday when a shroud pin broke. He arranged a tow ashore, a new pin, put the mast back up again, and then sailed back down to the starting area ready for the next race!
And the racing? The RS Sprints were an excellent format led by the Race Officer - the commodore of Rutland SC, John Fothergill. Sharp starts, accurate lines and true beats all weekend. Jasper Barnham and Freya Pembery were trading 1st / 2nd with Richard and Eilidh Harvey; and Chris and Gill Jordan trading 3rd / 4th with Iain and Sarah Yardley in the first 2 races. The wind in general was shifting to the right all day - resulting in lots of mark moving exercises for the safety boats. The first two races the wind held at around 8-10 knots, and then there were a couple of races in lighter winds (down to 2 knots at one point), large 70 degree shifts and James and Jenny MacGregor appeared at the front of the fleet. With no sign of the wind returning, the Race Officer made a great call and sent us home at about 16:00.
On the Sunday there was more wind - gusting up to 18 knots during the first 2 races, before settling at around 10-12 for the remaining 4 - requiring both high and fast and soaking deep at different times.
Dan and Cat Rule from Carsington found a whole "go faster" gear to appear at the font of the fleet, although it was Steve Tylecote and Freya Pembery who managed to find the lead just when it mattered in each race.
The final race finished and was followed by a 1.5 mile beat home – we were still all off the water by 15:00. One of the best Open Meetings we have been to.
