International 14 2018 Australian Championship at Darling Point Sailing Squadron - Day 5

5-12 January 2018
David Hayter & Trent Neighbour sailing Wang Wang, from Darling Point Sailing Squadron have secured the Australian title with a convincing win in the penultimate race. In fact they can DNF or not sail in the final race and still win on a countback.
Very light Easterly before the start shifting ENE by the time the course was laid. First start attempt was a general recall, it was obvious at one minute that it was going to be so. Line relaid and they all got away to a clean start on a four lap windward & return course.
Gradient wind was ENE with a NE sea breeze trying to come in but not strong enough to overpower the gradient. This led to some random big shifts up to 20 degrees. Some handled it - some didn't.
David Hayter led around the first mark closely followed by Mark Krystic & Greg Coutts. The went in all directions down the run. Windward mark the second time saw Hayter ahead of Dave Alexander in second. Dave Hayter increased his lead for the rest of the race to 2 min. 24 sec over Dave Alexander with Mark Krystic in third.
Last race Friday starting 1200 and forecast is "variable, increasing ENE up 10 - 15 knots in the middle of the day"
