Dee Caffari takes on Three Peaks Yacht Race for Sail 4 Cancer

by Lizette Van Niekerk 29 Jan 2016 02:08 PST 29 January 2016

Yachtswoman Dee Caffari will realise a lifelong dream and take on the very challenging Three Peaks Yacht Race from Barmouth to Fort William, starting on June 11th. She will be raising funds for the work of sailing and respite charity Sail 4 Cancer.

The Three Peaks Yacht Race is one of the oldest and most remarkable multi-sport endurance races in the world. It is a unique event combining sailing, running and a little cycling; with the quirky feature that rowing is allowed in moments of calm. It takes competitors through some of the most spectacular scenery in the United Kingdom. Not only are teams required to have excellent sailing and navigational abilities, but they also run Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis, the highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland, in only a few days.

"I am excited to be taking part in an event that has been on my to do list and 2016 is giving me the opportunity. I will skipper the Sail 4 Cancer boat, hoping to raise funds and awareness for this charity in one of the toughest multi discipline events there is." said Dee. "The Race involves sailing in some tricky areas then overcoming the three highest peaks in Wales, England and Scotland. Tidal gates, ever changing weather and tough terrain are challenges that my team and I will be looking forward to."

Dee and her team will be raising funds for Sail 4 Cancer which is a charity she has supported for many years as a Patron. The charity has a growing waiting list of families who are in desperate need of a respite break after living with cancer for months and years. Dee and her team hope to raise £10,000 to provide 10 more families with a much-needed break this year.

She is putting together a very competitive team including expert meteorologist and navigator Libby Greenhalgh and hopes a good number of teams will take part this year. "Why don't you join me and take on this remarkable challenge or support my team and help us raise funds for Sail 4 Cancer".

Race Director Meic Ellis said: "We're delighted to welcome Dee, Libby and the Sail 4 Cancer team to the Three Peaks Yacht Race. Our race offers the challenge they've found in the world's great ocean races, only a bit nearer to home and we know they'll have an amazing time on the west coast! You don't have to be round-the-world sailor to take part however. Our teams come from all sorts of sailing and sporting backgrounds and all share a great sense of adventure and camaraderie."
