What happened to Ally Pally in March?
Seems all wrong to me.

Massive thread a while back. Dinghy sailing is strong in the North and Midlands with the South more, but not exclusively Yachting. Allí Pally is easy day drip on the train form the North Farnborough miles away and a nightmare. RYA have signed a squilion year deal. Unless a class is active south of Watford eventually they just won’t bother coming.
Though from the north moved about 1/2 an hour away so if nothing else going will go

Hampshire. Just happens to have a Guildford postcode, like many of us in this part of the world. I don’t know whether the majority of visitors drive to the show or take public transport, but getting to Ally Pally by car is a PITA from the A3 corridor. Selfishly, Farnborough will be much easier for me. Hence, I will go this year whilst I’ve not been to Ally Pally for some years.

Hope to go. Suspect Farnborough was cheaper than others - can't imagine dinghy sailors paying NEC prices. But yes, a silly place for northerners, especially the NE. Though where the idea came from that we all sail yachts down here and all sail dinghies up north I'm not sure. Dinghies go with cloth caps and ferrets?

Couldn't find the previously mentioned thread on the subject.
I liked Ally Pally as a venue but obviously Londoncentric.
However Farnborough viewed from afar is just a London suburb.

I totally understand the reasons for moving the show but it will mean we won’t go very often.Mrs Grumpycat and I have been regular visitors to the Dinghy show for the last few years on the Saturday because it makes a great day out. We live in Coventry , so it straight onto the m1 and it’s a easy drive to ally pally . Get there early, look round the show in morning , then have a gentile stroll up the hill to the shops to have some lunch. Then a nice relaxed drive home. Farnborough doesn’t really have the same pull for a day out lol. Plus you have to play with the m25 . Think we will give it a miss this year but I still really hope the show is a success .

This is news to me? The Dinghy show has moved to Farnborough? Are they totally mental? I know the b**tards at Ally Pally were difficult to deal with, but they had a good slot (thanks to me) and only one build day.
But Farborough? Really? where is that on the planet nowhere?

You try getting decent attendances to dinghy events north of Watford... Maybe there are more yottys relatively than dinghy sailors down south but there are still way more people sailing dinghies than oop north.

Farnborough is easier or no worse for almost everyone apart from those in Essex. Train, plane or car are all viable and they are used to hosting far bigger events than a dinghy show!

Farnborough is a surprisingly good venue and much better and more flexible than Ally Pally. Don’t diss it until you have been. It won’t suit everyone in terms of travel, but then nowhere will that is affordable and convenient from a relatively low participation and interest sport.
Give it a try 👍
(I used to work on the nearby business park overlooking the airfield, and used to live nearby, so have a first hand viewpoint)

Essex ? If you live North of London it’s worse
From Darlington (main East coast train line) it was an easy day trip. Farnborough adds 3 hours onto the round trip.

It’s not an easy decision and there are no easy answers. Do you make it easier for the minority or the majority or just make it easier for the admin and growth of the venue. Whatever, provide an answer yourself as it is clear we have outgrown Ally Pally .

For GRF’s benefit, Farnborough is on a fast rail line from Waterloo.
Perhaps there’s an argument for alternating between southern and midlands / northern venues but it would no doubt increase costs and put off some exhibitors.

Well I guess if your world is the M3 A3 corridor which is after all RYA territory then you'll be fine, but for me a hundred plus mile bash round the M25 I think is probably further than I wish to extend my saturday morning annual ritual so will probably give it a miss. Shame, it's one thing I really used to look forward to, another example of the post Covid landscape being irrevocably altered.

Went at least 3 times from Darlington as a day trip, the last time with young teenagers (didn’t go again as we moved south - not to be near Farnborough) For context it usually clashed with the start of our sailing season and so about 1 year in 3. Darlington in not as far north as people think on the train 2.30 hours, visited London more then that I do now. Would never drive it

My idea of a boat show is one held on a bank holiday weekend in the warmer months, Rutland water would be the venue, good road links, railway station at Oakem.
Camping from the Friday, temporary buildings, food concessions, live concert Saturday night, could be one of the big tribute acts we have in plenty, fancy dress races, generally a carnival weekend.
Combine it with a sailing boot sale, free bus touring local pubs and places of interest.

Tricky to get most places from Heathrow IMHO. Farnborough on the train is about 50mins from Waterloo or 40mins from Reading. You can fly in to Farnborough airport, but you probably need to charter a private jet so only really feasible for Int14 sailors

Last time I looked British Airways doesn't allow me to take my car on the plane, car hire from Heathrow is very expensive and tbh I don't really fancy a 900mi round trip driving without actually sailing somewhere.

Think outside the box - I think you can drive one of these on a normal car license…
Gatwick might be easier. If no direct flight you could fly from Scotland for a weeks sailing to Canaries then weekend in Farnborough and repeat in reverse

I haven't been for a few years but for me the point of going was not looking at boats, but arranging to meet some mates for a few beers and then bumping into more mates and having beers with them too. So driving was never really an option.
To go to Farnborough by train would take me 3 hours on a good day and this time would also involve replacement buses.
That's from Brighton.

Won't be going this year, the V1.0 of anything new is a disaster..I've been on a course at Farnborough, a few hundred yards from the venue.. The place is Traffic jam city, long queues every morning and evening, though that was during the week.
As for time to get there, from Norfolk you're are talking of an extra 50 miles each way so that's an hour without the nightmare that can be the M25. So taking the allowance for the journey up to at least 4 hours. Making it a very long day..
I can see the attraction for those carting equipment and boats to the show, much better access.. However other than not walking up that darned hill, I can see no attraction for the punter..

One thing I've just noted from another hobby that uses Ally Pally, is that from next year there will be parking charges there. So that would be a further discouragement to use the place.
The problem with holding a dinghy exhibition at say Rutland in the summer, is many of us course are involved with sailing events elsewhere. This includes many exhibitors.
Our own Horning Boat show is the 30th April 2022, it's date is carefully chosen to be before the main broads boating season, and not on the day of any major local sailing events.. Sadly there's not a lot of dinghy stuff there, although Horning sailing club is open for a Try Sailing Day.
The RYA is very London / South coast biased,
To my eyes an ideal dinghy exhibition site would be Doncaster's exhibition centre. It's just off the A1/M18, linked to the M1 and across to the west coast via the M62, easy rail links, and even an airport.
For me on the coast of Norfolk it's got the same projected time to travel as Farnborough, but at least it's not the M25.
It would be interesting to see a map plotted of exhibitors, and attendees. That would show the actual centre of minimum travelling for everyone.

Unfortunately the the RYA is the Royal YACHTING Association, and dinghies are seen just as a route to the big boats.
The show it's self ran for 31 years before the RYA took it over in 1983. Who ran it before I have no idea.
It a problem for many hobbies that shows were originally created in London because of availability of halls, of course everyone travelled by rail and we still had a good rail network.
Now many areas don't have easy ( or cheap) rail services, so the car is needed. London has become very anti car and other than Ally Pally parking is in very short supply.
I've just looked up the cost of travel for me to Farnborough.
Rail 4.15 hours each way, + 1/2 hour driving to the station, booked ahead ticket £71, parking £3 so a total of about £80.
Driving 176 miles 3.3 hours each way. total £70 fuel.
In previous years there would be two of us travelling so rail would be double the cost
If in the future I go to Farnborough, I think I'll drive most of the way, day before and kip in the back of the Landrover somewhere. Attend the show, drive some of the way back have another kip before travelling on..

First time I went to the Dinghy Exhibition as it was then, it was in some strange place called 'Piglet's Loch' or somesuch, luckily someone else was navigating. Went a few times when it was at Crystal Palace. About 3 times to Ally Pally. Times have changed, it used to be that for many sailors, the only things happening between Xmas and March were the Show, the Pompey Persiher and the Bloody Mary. Things have changed. Back in the dark ages, it was just class associatiions (remember the spat between the 505's and the RYA about letting RS in when they hadn't sold any boats yet?) but every class association worth the name. One year a mate of mine was on the Mercury stand, when they built their 101st boat. Not sure what the point of it is now? But if the people who support it are happy and it generates some interest, let them get on with it. Those of us who'd be intersted in a different kind of show maybe ought to make it happen?

Pickets Lock, went there in 1978 showing a new fangled device called a videotape connected to a TV with a film about windsurfing on it, playing to an annoying song. sail on sail on whatever, think it was the beach boys, they made me turn it off.
Interesting to note the RYA appear to be making a play for Wing foiling at this new show, as usual going about it with all the wrong players.

I first went when it was Crystal palace, then there was a gap while I lived in the Hebridies, but once back in Norfolk we've normally been going every other year. There's a lot of people I know there from Norfolk or other clubs.. Also of course there are several businesses from Norfolk that have stands, as had my own club one year advertising http://www.3rr.uk/" rel="nofollow - Home (3rr.uk) So I always know a few on the stands.. Once or twice this has paid off with free tickets..
The boat life show looks interesting, and I may make a trip to it, if it continues, But the entry fee of £15 plus £16 parking plus 176 miles each way, means an expensive £100+ for a day out

Just found another reason for moving out of Ally Pally, it's inside the new extended ULEZ, so unless your car is VERY recent, it could have cost you £12:50 to go inside the M25.. £100 in anything bigger, so a great chance of many no longer going to Ally Pally when added to the parking charges there next year.. Many of the club and small traders would not want to pay £100 for their old wagon to go there..
So if you are going to Farnborough don't miss a turning and go inside the M25 it could be expensive..
Check your car here.. https://www.checkcardetails.co.uk/cardetails/ because other cities are cashing in on this money maker .. Manchesters area for in stance is Huge..

Manchester CAZ is huge as you say but private cars are exempt as are disabled vehicles. We have just changed our camper for a newer one, the trigger being that the old one would have fallen foul of the CAZ though that wasn't the only reason for changing. It is currently being contested but whether anything will come if that I don't know, maybe an old Range Rover should be my next tow car as 'classic vehicles' are also exempt

Unfortunately it’s the government’s favourite method of getting clean air in cities. Just another tax on the poor who cannot afford newer cars or go electric. They were trying to force Coventry council to have one and the only way round it was to have average speed cameras fitted to all the main roads into the city .

The purpose of the CAZ in Manchester is to combat NO2 on high traffic routes which is more a product of Diesel engines. The use of wood burners and BBQs is likely evenly spread across the area so can't explain the high concentrations of NO2 and particulates on these routes.

Norwich has that in one or two places.. the most concentrated being particularly around the castle... and that road is only open to.... Buses and taxi's!!! The other bad ones are also on major bus routes..

Not really a surprise, and at least they are doing something about the direct problem, slowly... Also as most bus routes are, by definition, the main commuter routes adding other diesel vehicles just adds to the problem. Now if public transport was not in private hands the council could easily deal with the problem caused

Walsall Council had a major trolley bus network upto early 70s,when west Midlands PTE was formed, they took over the network against the wishes of the council, closed it down immediately, replaced with diesel buses.

I thought it was quite busy today all things considered. There is much more space so less shoulder to shoulder action, so looks not so packed out. Having said that, I thought there were less stands, less CA’s present and even the trade stands were quite small. Just my thoughts. However, I saw the H2 stand quite often busy 😊 The venue needed more eateries (pasty stand and a sandwich stand was about it) and was very lacking in a beer and wine bar. It’s the first time at this venue and the first time after Covid so willing to be give it some leeway. Thought the venue much better than Ally Pally overall, if less atmospheric

Well, hush my mouth this show must have been a resounding success.
Three of us went and OK it was a bit further, but a lot quicker to get to, loads of free parking, plenty of space, penty of space to grow, may even show there myself next season if I can persuade them to consider our Industry. It was spread out, wider gangways, smaller retail stands seemed to me to be more class stuff, but we rocked up just after ten, walked straight up to the desk bought tickets and we were in. There was a radio control pool in a hark back to Crystal Palace days.
Initally I felt it was busier even though the gangways were wide, Alley Pally you really have to go to the minimum legal gangaway widths to make it pay and use all the available space for exhibitors. Presumably the new venue and Covid has taken it's toll on the industry's marketing budget so there were a few noticeable missing parties.
The Food and drink dispensers hadn't gotten their act together the girl on the first place I called on for my bacon bap complained that this was the fiirst time she'd used this particular system and they were having early show issues. The central themed place with the upstairs bit didn't serve 'posh' coffee so got a miss from some of our guys.
Star of the show for me was the Pornstar, totally changed my view of that boat, I think we'll see that catching on and fast. Interesting the RYA are flirting with our Industry again there was a moment three of us old windsurfing crusties, Dee Daldwell Peter Hart and I had a pleasant catch up and chat about familys, the sport and possible future of the show for us.
Stayed their much longer than normal mainly down to being a passenger in a vehicle of Contender sailors who are worse than shopping with wimmen for talking bollox to just about everyone they met.
But it was a great day and I think not such a bad call after all, Farnborough isn't so bad to get to and as I said plenty of room to grow.
Other thinhgs I got up to, Dave Barker (ex Farr Sailor and weighs the same as me) showed me his new H2 and how to rake and depower the rig so I'm not quite as dis approving of that big fat head as I was previously, not entirely sure of the rasberry ripple graohics, but his enthusiasm for the boat was infectious.
Tried to buy an aluminium trolley which was a nightmare not actually worth talking about here, but I think eventually I have come up with a solution. Hung around at the new Sailsports end of the show checking out some competitors foil stuff, they're about to get a bit of a shock as the brand I sell is just about to launch a bit of a game changer.
Saw a nice colured Merlin and pleased to report I can now pretty much identify what all the ropes do, as I also can on the Scorpion with its adjustable rake and I was also quite surprised at how the Supersofa has come along since I kast sailed it, they also have adjustable lowers. The new Solution sail looks fine and even though the boat showed the flat cut sail it still looked full enough to me to do the job, I don't use the flat cut prefering the Fuller as you would with a name like mine.
Didn't realise that sliding seat on the IC slides back and forth as well as sie to side, I bet that's interesting to change if the wind comes up on the fly. A nice Fireball, still lacking the Assym sail and wingwang pole I'd like to give it and I had an interesting chat about the kite on the Nacra and how foiling and bearing off and off is going to cope with a kite, it's pretty flat, but really wouldn't just a bigger jib to the job once you're up on foils?
There is not another show on Earth like this one for us enthusiasts, so much to take in and so much to miss, glad I went, definitely be back next year..

Oh and I nearly forgot, a couple of forumites tried mission impossible (to convince me the RS600 was worth a go)that is the mother of all rigs sizes, we had a chat about it on the way back in the car and reckon prabably it lies No2 after the Foiling Moth on the Grumpf most difficult boat to sail guide.(RS200 being No 3) ;-)

Good Lord iGRF. A positive post for a change from you ;-). Have you taken a happy pill?
Yep, it was a good show under the circumstances. The travel issue old farts were moaning about really isn’t. Am sure the show will be improved next year as this year is a learning curve and the start of getting back to normal.
Loads to improve on but it is a a positive

As an observation, I am not sure why they added the ‘& Watersports’ to the show title as there Was very little extra watersports on display, other than a small display at the far end.

If Graeme's comments are anything to go on they were thinking of the future.
Sounds like it was a good show, I may try to get there next year

I understand that the 'Watersports' was added to encourage a PR photo-op visit from one or more leading politicians. Sadly for the organisers - but thankfully for the rest of us - they didn't bite...

Thanks to the attendees of the show for their info about how the show went. Sounds like next year I might give it a go, complete with sarnies and a bottle of ginger pop (2 ltr)

Plenty of food and drink on Sunday, and literally, no queue. Catered well for allergies too.
The doom sayers were wrong. The show was good and busy, and the venue works although I agree the “watersports” bit didn’t really happen. A few absences, but given that we were all wearing masks and isolating with close contact when the traders had to book a stand, it is no surprise. I fully expect next years show to be the best in years.

Good to see so many making the effort to have stands and bring their boats along, some absolutely great boats on show, I thought the canoes were lovely - both the Tiger and the red one and the B14 looked great as well. The stages and presentations were easier to hear from the back than at Alli Pally - probs better audio kit, but for those of us walking by it was a nice change.
Thank you RYA for moving the show to Farnborough, I couldn't spend one more minute of my life stuck in north London traffic and I thought the venue did well in terms of catering and facilities even if the walk from the car park was a bit of an odd route. After such odd times and given the conditions prevalent when so many would have booked to exhibit (per the post above), this was a great return and very welcome.
