Gentlemen,

Some drysuits have an additional zip lower down.
And with hikers shorts and what have you etc, a cut off plastic bottle, (and I
mean the LOWER end) is often a useful collection device. Save it up and just
chuck the contents over a closely adjacent contending boat. Works wonders
in covering skirmishes

Even though I have reached an age where bladder problems should be creeping in, I have never done it. However I do have a salutary tale. I used to be a long distance truck driver in the days when we wore overalls and tractor units carried spare wheels horizontal  under the side of the chassis. When nature called  It was practice for some drivers to take down their overalls, sit on the spare wheel where the centre hole was conveniently situated and perform the necessary evacuation. One of my colleagues found himself forced to perform this operation. Upon completion he re adjusted his clothing, pulled his overalls up and climbed back into the cab.......only to be greeted by a dreadful smell....he had defecated into his overalls!

Ewww. I've got a somewhat similar story from when I was
on the Tall Ships Race with the Ocean Youth Club a long
time ago . . . we all had oilskins that were of the 'pull
over the head' rather than 'zip on the front' variety.
We had all been yelled at by the skipper for barfing in
the heads, and my fellow watch member woke up feeling the
urgent need to hurl. So he scrambled into his oilies,
scrambled on deck and made it to the leeward rail just in
time for his conference call with Ralph.

However, when he stood up . . .

He had his oilies on back to front, had puked into the
hood, and the contents of the hood were making their warm
and comforting way down the inside of his oilies. Yuk.

It’s a definite yes for me… and proud!

I have learnt not to do it during hot light wind event when there is no chance for a decent dunking /hose down. If I’m gagging from the smell I feel a little sorry for the bloke trapezeing next to me! So sometimes I try to hold on till the finish.

But on your average day I would usually get my first power piss in before I hit the water, normally during the sail pulling up process. However, I do know a man who sometimes gets his first power piss in before exiting the changing rooms!

But why do we do this in our wetsuits?…… because we need to piss so much, why do we need to piss so much?….. Because we drink so much….. Why do we drink so much? Read on

Dehydration impairs both physical and mental performance in all types and levels of sport, yet it can be avoided (or at least minimised) by appropriate drinking strategies. Exercise produces heat. Prevention of overheating occurs by transfer of heat to the skin by vasodilation of the cutaneous circulation, and by the cooling effect of evaporation of sweat. Exercise causes body fluid losses from moisture in exhaled air as well as from sweating. Although sweat rates are highest under conditions of high-intensity exercise in heat and high humidity, total fluid losses can be appreciable in very prolonged events, whatever the conditions. Unless fluid losses are replaced by drinks, sweating causes progressive depletion of circulating blood volume, leading to hypohydration (commonly called dehydration) and a thickening of blood. This places a strain on the cardiovascular system, with a rise in heart rate in order to maintain adequate blood flow to exercising muscles and vital organs. As blood volume depletes, blood flow to the skin is reduced. As a result, sweating decreases and heat dissipation from the skin is impaired, causing body core temperature to rise, potentially leading to heat stress.

Even low levels of dehydration have physiological consequences. A loss of 2% bodyweight (just 1kg for a 50kg person) causes an increase in perceived effort and is claimed to reduce performance by 10-20% A fluid loss exceeding 3-5% bodyweight reduces aerobic exercise performance noticeably and impairs reaction time, judgement, concentration and decision making.

Don't forget that all those hangover-busting caffeinated drinks have a lovely dieuretic effect.

Do remember though that in cold weather whilst you may feel temporarily warmer, the act in fact has a cooling effect, as you move heat from inside your body to the outside. Further, those areas of the skin that are warmed will see increased bloodflow, causing even more cooling.

Hey Marksey. So to alleviate the headaches I invariable get after a vigourous sailing session, I need to drink more prior to getting on the water, continue drinking whilst out there, pee in my hikers & drink more when i get home!  Excellent. I like smelling like an old tramp!!!!!
