Fairly sure that is not a rust pattern on the jib. Rather looks to be a mylar or similar sailcloth which has aged considerably. A few experimented with such cloths in the 90s but nearly everybody has gone back to dacron as more stable and holds shape better.

also the film sail cloths tend to lose any  benefit of their  smoother surface and  alleged  dimensional stability   when used  for jibs vs mains  in dinghy applications
