There was indeed a woman helming Ella Bache -Adrienne Cahalan:

Adrienne Cahalan, Brasil 1’s navigator, is the only women in the Volvo Ocean Race 2005-2006. A qualified lawyer with a degree from Sydney University, Adrienne’s main career is in offshore and inshore navigation for round the world racing and weather routing. In 2003, she completed a Master of Science in Applied Meteorology at the University of Reading, UK and based her thesis on southern hemisphere meteorology.

Adrienne has sailed in 13 Sydney Hobart Races, a Kenwood Cup, 10 World Championships in dinghies and yachts, three Admirals Cup campaigns, three Fastnets, eight Transatlantics, been involved in three Whitbread - Volvo campaigns, and several circumnavigation projects including two Jules Verne/RTW attempts (the last one being successful).

Adrienne has been nominated for World Yachtswoman of the Year four times and was the first women that have broken the record for the fastest time around the world in any type of boat. She was navigator aboard Cheyenne, a 125ft maxi catamaran which has broken the Round the World Speed Record on 5 April 2004 in 58 days, nine hours, 32 minutes and 45 seconds.

Adrienne Cahalan’s Achievements:

• 1992-9318ft Skiff Grand Prix Champion ‘Ella Bache’ Skipper
