He was allegedly sailing, I was in a power boat, I had just come through the lock.
The busies who pulled me over asked me if I had seen a Mr G Catt , something about non payment of fees, only joking, got a lecture on power gives way to sail.

Last year the Lidl (or was it Aldi) paddleboard was a Mistral and actually rather better than many of the cheaper 'bandwagon jumpers' products. I do know that Mistral are no longer the 'proper' windsurfing company they were back in the day and now more of a lifestyle brand but their SUPs (and other kit) is usually of decent quality While the Lidl SUP was less than half the price of the 'standard' product it was definitely not a beach toy. Sadly I missed out  Unhappy and ended up spending nearly £500 on my Fanatic iSUP...

Time trialling and road racing have seen a big drop post covid. One of the big mistakes of covid restrictions was stopping organised (outdoor especially) sporting events. A lot have dropped out of the habit. 

But overall I seem to see as many people as ever out. Plus more on e-bikes on the mtb trails. But it's interesting that there was also a move from racing to sportives. 

I think a lot of this is because in a volunteer led sport the events are more focused on sporting integrity and finding a fair winner. However, most people aren't competitive enough to really value that (as much as the keeno volunteers) and would much prefer a vaguer line of competitiveness with some more social extras thrown in. 

I would expect most organised sport to take a hit this year as there ae so many holidays and weddings carried over from the last two years. Hopefully this is a blip.

My impression from HISC is that numbers down the club seem pretty good this year (especially as more people are away abroad). Racing numbers seem about where they have always been. But lots of people just coming the club for a weekend of watersports / beach. This has always been a feature of HISC but also fits pretty well to a post covid world. SUPing, winging, wind foiling and kitesurfing (on the seafront) all seem in incredible health and HISC offers a good place for storage, parking and a shower and bar after. Those point seem to mean it can hold it's own against the public car parks on the sea front despite not offering loads in organised events for these newer activities.

I think PY racing can be a bit like a Sportive, (give or take the mass participation element?), in that people are often really not there for the results or to be compared with the club champion who's sailing a different class. Personal goals and all that.

A lot of people got a lot out of their sports last year after 2020 basically didn't happen. 2021 was not a bad year. In that narrow sense! A lot of other activities were more resricted than sailing, so we were mostly well supported. In one of my clubs, it's noticeable that some people are catching up on other things this year. A few of us, having moved to singlehanders, are muttering about getting back to spinnaker boats. There is always variation from year to year, and it's more noticeable in  a smaller club. The rebounds from covid plus the economy, on top of long term trends may not be kind to some clubs which were not strong to start with.

I don’t think anyone at my club thinks of yardstick racing in any of its forms as being like a sportive.

It’s a RACE ( and a sportive isn’t )  and it’s what 90% of sailors do , up and down the country , week in week out. The rest, club together at the limited number of clubs that still insist on only class racing or are not interested in club racing anyway and just do opens.

Both branches of the sport are good and you can mix and match as much as you want  . But it does get a little wearing on here , people constantly running down py racing and the people that do it and people constantly looking down py racing as if it just glorified cruising.
PY is not a LESSER type of racing its just a DIFFERENT type of racing  Big smile.

If everyone thinks like that, a lot of clubs which aren't providing meaningful racing won't survive.

 Our PY racing is hard fought among a couple of groups sailing the same classes, training for some, time on th water for others. The odd person who takes the spreadsheet too seriously will usually ed up saying things like 'that was a Laser course today' or 'the wind dropping suited the faster boats'.



Sure people are trying to get to the next mark as quickly as possible, but as in a Sportive, people aren't really thinking they're better sailors than the kids in the 29er because they beat them on PY, or worse sailors because they didn't beat them on the water. People realise that PY is not a rigorous means of showing who sailed better in a race, and a lot of people realise that's actually often a good thing. Lots of people don't want to race too seriously, they just want to enjoy sailing their boat, whatever boat they choose, for whatever reason, with a bit more structure than just milling around the bay.

...and it could be argued, that in PY racing, there's often more chance of actual on the water racing - class racing sometimes gets spread out early and that can mostly be that. In PY (handicap or pursuit) there can be more of a melting pot. Personally, I love the chase of a pursuit, where I start about a week next Tuesday after the Cadets and Teras and have to try and time-travel to catch 'em.
