Yep when I've pointed that out to canoers and paddle boarders on the broads they seem very surprised they have to pay broads tax currently £37.78... Edited by The Q - 21 May 22 at 5:29am |

because to some extent you can... a a BCA membership is enough to access all the canals and rivers in our area, and to be honest, paddling down to a pub is far more fun than paddling around in circles on a wind-blown lake. Where I think paddle boards fit into sailing clubs is that they could be used for silly games on zephyr Wednesday nights, or at least keep people from becoming bored when the AP is at half mast signalling another dead duck day and a wasted pass. (Add wing foiling / windsurfing to the other end of the wind spectrum)

I haven't read all the posts, who has? But a big part of starting any new activity is safety.
Even dancing I imagine. No one wants newcomers having an early negative experience and putting them off their new found enjoyment. This is why most organisations/sports have a training program. Its not about competing or improving always, but to give beginners to gain confidence in their own abilities and to handle the various scenarios and activity can throw at you. I would suggest many beginners give up at this stage, either choosing that they can't be bothered to do some basic training or have that negative experience, The example of paddle boarders is ok for a comparison on the terms of its easy to get into, relatively lower coast to some sports and doesn't necessarily require training, although I would recommend it, I saw a young lady on a SUP in January on a quiet river. She had a summer wetsuit on and was on her own. I asked if she had anyone going with her, had told anyone what was she was doing and had consider taking a vhf radio. No to all 3. That's something training would cover. Similar with cycling, just knowing the highway code and how to fix a puncture, but as commented a lot do this as a group. Most sea sailing club discourage lone sailing outside of organised sailing. Although I learned most of my sailing in the summer sailing with school friends in a small flotilla. Breaking down barriers to entry is all well and good, but straight forward necessary training or instruction, even informally should not be overlooked. Anyway you meet more people, make new friends and join a community, which its what its all about |

You can buy a paddleboard from Lidl for £200 sometimes, inc pump and paddle... it's a bag of nails and I wouldn't take it anywhere near a coastline, but for dicking around on lakes and rivers in the summer, it does the job.
Even a top end touring/racing hardboard is only a couple of grand, with the inflatable version of the same shapes coming in at half that.... The reason most people are members of sailing club - real estate - they need somewhere to park their boat. Even the expensive clubs around my UK base are less than 4 months at a container storage facility - as such, they ARE exceptional value for money, if we are at least honest about the primary reason for club membership. None of that is an issue for paddleboard - even a hard board.

Totally agree with both points . Elaine joined up to the BCA as soon as her got the Board, but it’s amazing how many boarders think they can just turn up at every river/lake/pond/sailing club/ canal and use the water without paying . Re boards and clubs , Elaine uses hers at at the club when we have a social event and loads of members have a go. But it’s not something she would do normally due to the size ( tiny ) nature of our puddle .

I caused a bit of a kerfuffle on Oulton Broad when I was a kid, a yachtist got quite hysterical, he was going round and round in a big circle, I got fed up of waiting, so I pulled into the middle of his circle, then waited and pulled out the other side, I gave him the finger, couple of minutes later I was pulled over, think it was the police, but could have been something else.
