Hi
I have a Phantom at Lee on Solent which might suite you, come and have a look this weekend as we have a combined Contender, Phantom and Solution event. On another day you would be welcome to have a go in my Phantom and see if you fancy one. Regards Gordon 1465 Seacreature

Plus a single handed N12 doesn't have a PY if you want to race it. Your club might give you a personal handicap but it feels simultaneously unfair ( howling winds) and a bit of a cheat ( manageable winds).
Big reason I sold my v3000 and got a contender. |

I owned a N12 20 years ago and sailed it regularly singlehanded at 90kg+... it was an old Baggy Trousers design, great fun and dynamic; but you'll need more up-to-date input related to anything newer on the design front.
I've also owned an RS200 which I used to sail singlehanded too... kinda wish I'd kept it given how little I paid for it back then and how much it's worth now. It'd be a great beach boat with the kids. Either way, both are going to be a compromise, especially racing them crewless, compared to a dedicated singlehander. It all comes down to the fun factor vs the need to comply with racing convention. FWIW - the RS300 is one of the best single handers out there still. Way ahead of its time and I'd snap one up in a heartbeat if I were still living in the UK. The D-Zero shares many of the niceties of the 300 without the quirkiness when it gets blowy... definitely should be on your list to consider too.

I certainly wouldn't recommend a National as being the ideal boat for George. However, at 95kg he is ,on his own, about the same weight as most of the top crews so I wouldn't expect him to be easily overpowered, and at 5'11" he will have no problem seeing over the crowd to get served at the bar (once he is old enough)

N12 is a handful single handed. Probably would be fine in Force 2 but above that, you need a crew really.

at 6'3" and 95kg+ the 300 is fine for power, in sail on the Blackwater out of Marconi, so get to sail in the flat and in some nasty chop, it will submarine but it will pop up, just makes it more fun.

Also depends on budget I guess! As a similar shape in terms of weight and height when I was looking for a single hander I narrowed it to a short list of Phantom, Blaze, Finn and H2. I had not included the 300 probably because one of my mates had one who was on the larger side and he seemed to struggle to get it really flying in anything less than a gale but I am sure it can be done if Sargesail says so and is a similar size!

Are you misreading the post Rich? The 300 is a singlehanded. Of the boats you reference only the Contender has a lower PY and then only by 1 PY point. George as a 5 11, 95kg long term 300 owner I would say that the 300 meets your needs although it will present some challenges in the Solent chop. |
