Thinking of buying a new watch for running, and I've seen there are a number of sailing timers in the garmin app store.
Has anyone used any of them? Any good? |

You'll need to read your class rules carefully. A lot of the rules ban devices which show VMG, current speed through water, etc.
Some have only just allowed digital compasses! |

Would only be using mine for training - mostly for running but would be interesting to see speed too whilst out training in my boat. Would not use when racing as frankly there is too much going on to look at speed!

Yes, I had the Garmin Quatix 5, but sold it last year for an Apple Watch (only because I wanted ApplePay or Bank card support) . Useful info for sailing, but as ColPrice2002 says, be aware of your class rules.

Garmin Connect. It also tracks and map displays your sail afterwards on the App. I understand the Quatix can interface to Garmin yacht instrumentation, but an Aero is not in that league ;-) (for the iPhone, I use the Waterspeed app - I am sure there are many others)

I’ve used a Garmin Vivoactive 3 for this, I’ve used an application on it called “Race Countdown”. It will count down your start sequence, and record your GPS track, which you can then upload to Strava etc..
The Vivoactive 3 is one of their cheaper wearable devices but is fine for this, and will also record your heart rate from its built in wrist sensor, you don’t really need anything better for sailing. Its also good for cycling, running, swimming etc..

I'll give that one a try, thanks. I've just bought the Forerunner 245 Music.

I have a Garmin Quatix 5. Its great for everything apart from what I bought it for - dinghy racing.
Its brilliant for bike rides, rowing, hiking, even open water swimming, but racing - not so good. Firstly the distance to line feature (why I bought it). Its too slow to update. It says I am 5m behind the line when I am on it. Then it catches up a few seconds later it tells me I am over the line. Its OK for off shore racers but not for dinghy racing. Secondly the countdown display is too small. I thought it would expand to fill the screen, but it doesn't - its hardly readable, especially if using with the distance to line feature. I have downloaded 2 apps which have a bigger countdown display, but my old Suunto gives a much clearer countdown, and is easier to use, so I have reverted to that. So all in all I love its features and look - but don't buy it for dinghy racing (unless I have missed something in set up).
