Its been approved before, will world sailing reimbusre manufacturers there development costs if they rescind the rule again.

Will world sailing pay for physio and chiropractor support from sailors wearing 8kg harness ?

I make harness for a living and supply a large number of mainly elite level sailors with harness's and accessories. In my opinion the rule is dangerous and opens up as many issues as it attempts to close.

Its a weight jacket back in through the back door.

I have read  the rule and purchased the ISO document, some time ago in fact and consider that it needs a re think and quickly. You can call me any time Baz and discuss.

If any of you think you can a)communicate that news to any but a few elite and b) enforce it you're in cloud cuckoo land.

I for one wouldn't give a toss for the regulation it's about as relevant as not having an enforced helmet reg something far more relevant in my view, are they (World Sailing) proposing some sort of kite mark? Good luck with organising that in a cottage industry like the trapeze harness market.

I often wonder what colour the sky is, on the planet they are on, it certainly isn't blue.

Oh and the whole ISO release thing is currently under review in May, last I heard, they are currently testing kite bars, I know this because it's holding up the production of our new bar and safety release system which should have been on the market this season but got delayed.

It was approved before as a rule before there was a standard to build and test to. There are harnesses out on the market that currently don't comply with the weight rule as they contain lumber support built into their design, which was why the weight was increased.

If you don't want to comply, then don't. 10862 doesn't and specifically doesn't apply to kite harnesses so I think maybe you're mixing up your ISO there. There is a move to see whether it can be endorsed under the MED as personal safety equipment which would lead to third party verification moving it to personal safety equipment.

It's in the rule book for next time around. Suggest you start learning the rules.

I'd have thought harnesses were a good case for education, not regulation, but obviously not.

Is there going to be a black market in old style harnesses?

Difficult, and indeed pointless, to learn rules that arenít in place.

I am more concerned with what effect this will have on old harnesses. if suddenly people have to chuck away old harnesses and buy news ones it is going to cost a small fortune and you will either see people blanket ignoring said rule or trapeze sailing will take a massive hit.

I agree there is possibly a need for some regulation here but education definitely has a big role to play. Entrapment is a risk from the hook getting caught, a small risk in most boats. You could argue kayak spraydecks have the same level of risk. I remember struggling to get a spraydeck off when I capsized, it was a scary experience.

Educated sailors and properly trained safety boats crews and properly equipped safety boats can mitigate the risk (as I believe was noted in at least one of the entrapment deaths reports).

It's not clear that any of the QR harnesses you can currnetly buy are actually compliant?
Generally if something's not marked as approved to standard xyx, the assumption is that it isn't?

It's not really ideal that with 2 seasons to go, people are still selling non QR harnesses, but at least some can be changed to a new fitting wthout any sewing.
From what I read, you need to keep the little rubber retainer that everyone gets rid of to comply to the standard, as the hook must be retained when released from the harness?

Retain the hook to what?
Sounds like a rule that could very well have unintended consequences. Often happens with rules that are barely needed in the first place.

I think that was part of the reason it got canned first time around (as well as the lack of any standard for them).

I remember seeing one of our Fireball crews regularly ejected when his QR hook released without warning or being triggered.

Lucky for me, there's a good old Douglas Bader adage that I've found useful down the years regarding rules, wise men and fools.
