20 knots boat speed... with probably 2 knots of current and flat water and only achieved for a nano second!

Nice yacht around a week or so ago. Not much water in the harbour put a focus on boat handling but the flat water made it quite nice. A bit of sun helps too!

But look at foiling cats. There a flatter kite is faster around the course. 

In light winds you can't put much weight against the kite otherwise the apparent will go to far forward and create a load of drag on the deep cut kite. Then you'll just end up sailing the same speed but higher. That's why the 49er went to tighter cuts and slightly smaller too but faster round the course as well as straight line. There's a Canadian article describing the feel on this for 49ers somewhere... 

Then in heavy winds if the kite is too big you can't get the flow initiated over it which is slow also. 

But the 14 doesn't have great leverage s you can see why they went for a fuller kite to take the depth. 

I just wonder a what amount of righting moment and hull drag that it starts to become faster in VMG to have flatter or smaller kites.

You only have to look at the 12 foot skiffs... There's two sorts of faster, faster through the water and faster round the course. With a smaller kite and hotter angles you are inevitably going to be faster through the water, but the evidence seems to be that geometry wins out and lower and still pretty quick wins races.

I have in light winds taken the crews wire, with the tiller in front of the helms wires and elastics. Which works, but if there's a gust and the crew needs to move out then it get s bit awkward.

Can you route the helm trapeze elastic forward for the light? Might mean you can stay holding the tiller?

Light wind sail on Sunday. Wind with tide didn't help either. 

But we took the opportunity to try a new tacking technique that we'd played around with a bit in the light winds last year, but jut hadn't had opportunity to work on due to it being so windy all winter. 

The idea is that by having the helm move through the boat in front of the their own trapeze lines and the control lines then the weight is kept forward. It seems to keep the wide transom clear, but the downside is that you don't have a hand on the helm for much of the tack which makes correcting the turn rate difficult. Also, facing backwards you can't see the crew or jib and how they're moving, which makes getting the timings correct more difficult... the jury is still out!

It was also apparent that we were running quite a bit of weather helm, especially when just getting the helm on the wire. I guess with a tight leech to hold power, all the weight forward and some leeward heel to reduce wetted area it's not surprising.  But we put some bungee over the tiller and had  play around rudderless sailing to get a feel for the amount of sheet and heel to get a neutral helm.

Yep like an n12 the whole stock cants on the transom, through a range of 15-20 deg. Max on ie +10 for upwind until about 9kts boatspeed then you start backing off else the bow gets driven in. Downwind you go -5 or more degrees off in breeze.
