Well looks like I'm set for the drag race for Les Sables d'Olonne. The wind forecasts have changed a bit over the last couple of days favouring a more northerly course than I'm on (Bootscooter, I think that worked to your disadvantage as well, so we were both caught out by that).
I suspect I will be loosing places for the next day and then hoping the wind angles will favour me again for the last hours into Les Sables. Hoping to keep below 15k for my finish.

Finally crossed the equator, Phew! It's been a tough stretch from cape horn. Managed to claw back over 25000 places only to lose them putting in a tack to clear the South American shoreline. I'm hoping for a nice windshift to carry me NE to the finish.

At least you managed to tack away before hitting the shore Cry, I have been following a very similar track to you for the last couple of weeks (thunt is also close on our tails). Not much happening for the next 2 or 3 days then I think it is a case of hoping the Azores high lets us go round the top of it rather than through the middle!

Congratulations Plastic Pig, the first forumite home.

Looks like Bootscooter is going to be back for breakfast and I'll be in for dinner this evening Smile

By all accounts from the real sailors to the virtual regatta ones, the South Atlantic has been really painful this year.

The Azores high has been surprisingly difficult to call as well. Bootscooter got hit the hardest going below it, but the overall winners found that was the quickest route - tis luck of the draw to some extent. Thankfully we're only doing this from our armchairs!

Woohoo Smile
I finished at half past 6 this evening, my position was 13874 and I did the race in 80 days 6 hours and 26min. Having everyone on the forum racing definitely made it a lot more fun and kept me at it.
For the first time with no options very happy with my position, which was less than 24 hours behind the leading forumites with options.
Special mention to Dougal who was pretty much my pacing guide for my risk taking on virtually the whole journey - wouldn't have been the same without you in shouting distance keeping me on my toes.

My wife can now breath a sigh of relief. Good luck with all your finishes.

I've got a while to go still, does anyone know when and what the next big race is?

Not sure I'll do another one. This one was quite disappointing; iPhone App only worked when I was in Spain, not infrequent lock-outs (one when I sailed in the oppposite direction for 4 hours at 18 knots - then another 4 hours to get back again), but the biggest frustration for me was the ice gates. They just made the Southern Ocean a procession with very few tactical options.
