National One Design Sailing Academy provides premium marine experiences and training while following the One Design (1D) Sailing concept. Since our creation in 2013, we have grown into a truly unique model that is disrupting the traditional operations of the marine industry.
The inception of 1D Sailing began with founder Dave Smith. In the late 1980s, in a quest to breathe new life into the sport of sailing in Canada, Smith introduced the concept of “pro” racing to the sport. His theory was that young sailors had no heros to emulate, as in other sports, and therefore there was no desire to follow in their footsteps. Smith joined with two American sailors in building and hosting North America’s first ever professional sailing competition: the Ziploc Ultimate Yacht Race.
The innovation of providing 6 figure cash purses and paying sailors to race was completely foreign and deeply disruptive at the time. It is seen today as a critical moment in the evolution of sailing and a re-starting point for yacht racings’ eminent sailing competition, the America’s Cup.
It is from that passion that 1D Sailing was born. With a firm grip on the pinnacle of the marine industry Smith, along with a new team, aimed to then make the path to sailboat racing more accessible for all. Today they have not only achieved this goal, but continue to challenge the status quo daily.
Today 1D Sailing has become synonymous with the values we adhere to; innovation, performance and integrity. Our snow tiger mascot is recognized across North America, and continues to attract clients worldwide.
