Navy Spring Women's Intersectional.
Day 1 of the 2011 Navy Spring Women's Intersectional went very smoothly for the 18 teams in attendance.
Promptly following the 0930 competitors meeting, the fleet headed out in cloudy and slightly chilly conditions for the morning races. The wind was out of the Southwest and a four leg windward leeward course was set in the Severn River, off Triton Point, near the entrance to Spa Creek. A Division began the day in FJs while B was in 420s.
The wind was light and shifty in the morning and four races were completed per division in five-eight knots and flat water before the fleet came in for a short lunch break. After lunch, the wind shifted left a bit and increased in strength while the skies cleared and the temperatures climbed into the upper 50s. While the wind remained shifty throughout the day, but the puffs crept up near 20 during the afternoon races and the waves picked up to near two feet on the left side of the course. After nine races, the divisions switched fleets and ran one race while the wind shifted right and decreased in strength back to the 5-10 range to end the day.
Boston College is in the lead with eight races remaining for tomorrow. Thanks to coaches Brian Clancy and Clinton Hayes for hearing protests, which resulted in three breakdown requests granted and one protest disallowed.
On Sunday, the wind filled in right at the 0900 report time out of the Northwest and quickly built to 10-15 knots. A course was set in the Severn river right in front of the Robert Crown Center and eight races were completed per division to complete the regatta by 2:00 PM. The wind stayed in the 15 knot range all day, with multiple shifts up every legs coming from both sides. The fleet handled the conditions extremely well and the quality of racing was very high throughout the day. Thanks to LT Ben Herring and his team of Midshipmen for running great races in a timely fashion.
Congratulations to the Boston College Team of Brianna Provancha, Katy Nastro, Emily Maxwell, and Elizabeth Dudley for winning the 2011 Navy Spring Women's Intersectional.
