A Ride on the Wild Side
by Volvo Ocean race media on 27 May 2002
With both wind and tide now in their favour, the yachts competing in the
Volvo Ocean Race are enjoying a swift passage up the English Channel. The
tide is due to turn against them within the next hour or two, giving a
wind over tide situation, which will make for a very uncomfortable ride
for the next few hours.
A recent message from SEB to Race HQ sums it up
well: “Rough seas and lots of breeze, banging and crashing in the waves,
wet and wet again, but good racing with almost everybody in sight all the
time. Not at all easy to sell the first dinner – nobody had any great
appetite!”
The boats are currently positioned 46 miles due south of Southampton, the
place where it all began some eight months ago, but there are still
several days of all out match racing to go before they reach the finish of
the race in Kiel on 9th June, if the current state of play is anything to
go by – just 3 miles separating the first 6 yachts.
