Goacher and Evans win opening race of Flying 15 Worlds

Goacher and Evans win race 1 at Flying Fifteen Worlds 2008 - Royal Yacht Club of Victoria, Melbourne (AUS) Teri Dodds http://www.teridodds.com

Steve Goacher and Phil Evans won the opening race of the 17th Flying Fifteen International World Championship on Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne. Eighty five boats from six countries competed in the the Open fleet with places amongst the top five being shared between three countries.

What a day. Just when we thought it couldn’t get better it did. At 2pm, the fleet started at the first attempt in 15 knots from 175. A fantastic start line with all 80 boats spread down the entire length. Well done the race team.

The fleet split fairly evenly on the two sides of the course. First to the top mark were Australian National Champions Grant Alderson and Dean Mcaullay. They was followed closely by Britain's Charles Apthorp and Alan Green, then Mike Hart and Richard Rigg.

Barry Parkin and Tim Hall tacked too close to Goacher and Evans at the mark and there was a collision. Parkin did turns.

Alderson and Mcaullay kept their lead around the second top mark - but only by a whisker over Steve Goacher and Phil Evans and then a pack lead by Hart and Rigg, Apthorp and Green, and the New Zealand pair Aaron Goodmanson and Alister Rowlands.

Then came Adam Hawkins and Ben Jones of Australia knocking Britain's Alan Bax and Bill Masterman down a place from the last rounding.

As the race progressed, it became windier and lumpier and by the third windward mark, Alderson and Mcaullay had lost his lead to Goacher and Evans, who went on to win the first race of the World Championship by 13 seconds with Alderson and Mcaullay second.

Third place was taken by Mike Hart and Richard Rigg (GBR), with a second GBR competitor, Charles Althrop and Alan Green fourth, followed by the first New Zealand crew, Aaron Goodmanson and Alister Rowlands in fifth place.

Two New Zealand crews had the closest finish with Murray Gilbert and Jonathan Burgen, just finishing ahead of Brett Willcox and Dave Pearson, after Gilbert called right of way on Willcox just short of the finish line allowing them to take 10th place with only a second or two separating the two boats in what was the closest finish of the day.

All results quoted above are provisional. Several protests have been lodged as a result of todays racing, however they are not expected to include the top finishers above.

The Classic fleet had an excellent twenty boat entry and the first race was won by Australians Clive Arnold and Phillip Parish (AUS 2251) with Reagan Bear and Les Kearney (AUS 962) in second and Michael McCartney and Darren Hocking (AUS 2243) in third place.

In the Silver Fleet, Steve and Megan Cranch won ahead of Ronald Joseph and Laurie Hatch, with David and Michael Arnold third. See all results below.
