J/22 Midwinter Championship - A Dazzler of an early lead

by Christopher E. Howell on 1 Mar 2013
2013 J22 Midwinter Championship race day 1 Christopher Howell
At the J/22 Midwinter Championship in Tampa, Florida, Allan Terhune of Arnold, MD helmed Dazzler to the lead on day one. Ideal conditions greeted competitors from fifteen teams at Davis Island Yacht Club, with breeze starting at six knots and building all day to sixteen, under sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s.

Four races were completed, and Terhune notched a line of 3,1,4,1 for 9 overall points. Chris Doyle’s The Jug 4 1 trails by two points, and Casey Lambert’s Blackburn Marine Racing holds the third position with 15 points.

Doyle began the regatta with a victory, followed by Art Silcox’s Folka and Terhune. Then it was Terhune’s turn to grab the win, with Richard Heausler’s Fast Company and Doyle rounding out the top three. As the winds built, Doyle excelled to take race three, with Lambert and Silcox close behind. Terhune ended the day successfully, with Lambert again in second and Terry Flynn’s Tejas in third.

Racing continues through Saturday, and nine total races are planned.
