Entries opened recently for the 2nd EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championships, being held in Tavira, Portugal from 3rd to 9th August. This event is the European Championship for sailors under the age of 19 (on 31st December), and incorporates the same disciplines and equipment as used for the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships.

The first event in this series was held in Aarhus, Denmark, in August 2012 and attracted sailors from 17 different European countries. Feedback from the sailors and coaches was very encouraging, particularly from a first event of its kind. For many competitors it was their first experience of a multi-discipline regatta, one which will stand them in good stead in years to come as their sailing careers develop.

Now we look forward to Tavira this coming August, the sunshine and golden beaches, as well as some exciting sailing for some of the most promising and talented young sailors in Europe. This event represents an extraordinary opportunity for young sailors, permitting them to experience the thrill and excitement of participating in a regatta involving sailors from different backgrounds and cultures, to say nothing of the social opportunity and lifelong friendship to be made.

Not only is Tavira the venue for the EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championships this year, but it is also the location for the ISAF Youth Sailing, World Championship in 2014. The European Championship this year, therefore, represents a fantastic opportunity for the coaches and sailors to familiarise themselves with the local conditions, tides and winds, in preparation for next year.

Entries remain open until June 15th. Each European Member National Authority (MNA) is permitted to enter two crews in each discipline. An MNA may apply for additional entries in one or more disciplines using the defined 'wild card' scheme. These additional places will be assigned by the Organising Authority, in association with EUROSAF, on a "first come first served" basis. Successful applicants will be notified as soon as possible after 15th June.
