SNECCA cats at St Andrews Sailing Club

It was on a warm June evening that some of the snecca fleet rolled into the sleepy town of St Andrews for the 2nd event of the season. After the usual evening of refreshments, we woke to what I can safely say was an awesome view. St Andrews Sailing Club is sited in the old life boat station, so you can imagine the sea view.

With the harr starting to lift as the sun burnt through it, the first race began. With a mix of Hurricane 2 sail, 3 sail, A class and dart 15, the fun began! The windward leg was hotly contested with all the boats in close proximity, at the end of the first beat Richie furber had managed to find some extra speed and was leading as the fleet headed to the leward mark. He managed to hold off challenges from the Kent brothers on there 5.9 sx and the Andrews on there 2 sail 5.9.

Race 2 started with the same gusto as race 1. This time the hurricanes getting the better of the A class, but it was a close run thing. The battle for first and second was very close with the Kents pipping the Andrews for top slot, closely followed by Furbies A class and Andersons 2 sail 5.9.

Race 3. The wind had really died off but the grit and venom was still there as the race began. All the boats were tightly grouped as they passed through the start, it was a game of patience! Dave and Ian Kent started to pull away as they went for the speed option, Martin and Claire Andrews went for line, Shona Anderson and Dougal Romford went for a bit of both and Ritchie Furber pointed his A class and took the high road. As the boats rounded the windward mark it was all to play for. The Kents hoisted there spinnaker and pushed there way to the front, closely followed by the rest all snapping at there heels. They managed to hold on to the end but it was very tight, martin Andrews was breathing down there necks!

Race 4, 5 & 6 were cancelled due to a lack of wind.

What a delightful place to sail and a very welcoming club. You should pay them a visit sometime.
