John and Lyn Martin of New Zealand's Island Cruising Association are in Australia at the moment with a rally, and on their way down the Australian east coast they are offering some cruising preparation seminars in several cities. This is a unique opportunity. The first is in Mackay on 20/12 October, so check the story for dates in a city close to you.
Another date for the diary is 30th October in Sydney, when the Cruising Yacht Club is holding an 'Around the World Sailing' information evening. You'll need to phone the club to indicate your attendance, as it looks like the numbers attending will be high.
It's also worth browsing the newly released Equipment Rules of Sailing put out by the International Sailing Federation. Not that a lot of it pertains to cruising, but it's great to stay informed. There's valuable information about the state of the art safety rules and the equipment to go with them.
Dutch teenagers have a lot of spirit, particularly young sailors. Inspired by Laura Dekker's defiance of authority, this week two young Dutch teenagers have put up their own brand of defiance by going sailing, and they have what appears to be good cause.
There are three boats featured this week, the Bavaria Cruiser 56, the Dufour 36 Performance and the 'supercat' - the Lagoon 450, reviewed by John Curnow. The product of the week is a Hatch Fan – wouldn't I love one of those sometimes in sweaty marinas!
Quirkiest story of the week is the San Francisco 'hero' who rescued an escaping catamaran, was thanked profusely, given a trip on the boat in appreciation, which he enjoyed, and the next day demanded $200,000 as salvage rights.
Much other news as well, so browse the headlines to find what attracts your particular interest, and here's wishing you...
