In Rochester, NY, the J/24 Worlds wrapped up yesterday and Brazil's Mauricio Santa Cruz on Bruschetta simply stayed on shore for Race 10 and still crushed the competition with a 43 points lead. PCYC's Rossi Milev on Clear Air, one of 24 Canadian entries, finished as the top Canadian in 7th place. Race participant Clarity Nicoll shares her insight in daily reports below.
More one-design action to report from the Mediterranean where Musanda-Oman Sail is leading the Multi One Design 70 fleet in Leg 4 of the European Tour 2012. The MOD70 is certainly generating much interest in offshore racing circles; a fleet of identical 70' multis, skippered by top names in sailing and a strong promotional appeal, what's not to like. The KRYS Ocean Race was the first event back in July, the fleet is now racing the European Tour with stopovers in Kiel, Dublin, Cascais, Marseille and Genoa where a race village and various inshore events should entertain racers and the general public alike. Building on the success of the European Tour, the programme will take the fleet further offshore in 2013 with the Ocean World Tour.
Back to the action; after leaving Portugal on Thursday, all five teams have now sailed past Gibraltar and are heading towards Marseille in Southern France where the Mistral should great them. It's been challenging sailing for the entire fleet so far; unusual wind patterns in Southern Europe, busy shipping channels in and out of the Mediterranean; as a result, we're seeing more separation in the fleet that originally anticipated. Suffering in the absence of wind, the high performance yachts should get back on the throttle tomorrow when better conditions fill in. The current leaderboard will likely change soon.
