As we recover from wistfully watching the Games, or in some cases, like that of our beloved leader and some of the Sail-World crew, witnessing Weymouth first-hand, we can only marvel at the skill and determination of the Aussie sailing team who salvaged the Games for Australia in terms of medal haul.
This epic achievement should certainly flow on to sailing, and the broader yachting/boating lifestyle, but it will require action in the form of Support - administration, sponsorship and marketing, Talent - medal winners who are charismatic Ambassadors for their sport, and PR - how well their exposure is managed.
Today we hear from the sports marketers and commentators, and later this week - once the jet lag and euphoria abate - we add exclusive comments from Yachting Australia about the 'grand plan' to turn medals in to participation in the sport.
Also news this week, the Brisbane Boat Show begins next Thursday, and if the current run of successful shows is an indicator, exhibitors will enjoy strong turnout and even better sales. It's great to report good news, so let's hope the consumer sentiment continues high and enthusiastic for boating!
Brisbane Boat Show Marine Queensland
In Shorncliffe, Brisbane this Sunday, the 'Voice Your Choice' rally against the extension of Marine Park Zones, which will be attended by politicians, industry and the public. Fish and chips are on the menu - a statement of what Aussies will be forfeiting if commercial and recreational fishers are locked out of the Coral Sea and other zones around the country. Some of the best sailing to be had anywhere in the world is there to be enjoyed at Audi Hamilton Island Race Week Jack Atley
At the risk of skewing too 'Queenslander', all eyes are on the 2012 Audi Hamilton Island Race Week, 17-25 August in the beautiful Whitsundays. Fresh from Weymouth, Australia's new Olympic hero, sailing gold medallist Tom Slingsby, will be racing aboard Peter Harburg's 66-foot sloop, Black Jack. I'm sure he will enjoy a rapturous welcome among the yachting fraternity and the broader public, keen to celebrate his victory in style during the country's most brilliantly located regatta.
