While most of us are enjoying some time off during the holiday season, there is no rest for the Velux 5 Oceans racers in the Southern Oceans. Each one is dealing with their own challenges: Christophe Bullens has finally rejoined the race course after repairs on his mast; Gutek has been forced to spend more time at the helm with autopilot problems and the rest of the fleet is still negotiating unusual weather conditions. Brad van Liew is still in the lead and was first to complete the speed gate section between 50E and 75E; the skipper who posts the best time between these two lines will be awarded extra points. The temperature in the southern seas has dropped dramatically and the leaders have to contend with constant icy conditions on deck.
South Australian Geoff Boettcher has sailed his Reichel Pugh 52 Secret Mens Business 3.5 to victory, winning the Rolex Sydney Hobart Race Tattersall's Cup, awarded to the best corrected IRC yacht, in his 22nd attempt. The event lived up to its fame again this year with difficult conditions, which forced many retirements in the early part of the race. The race committee created a bit of a stir at some point when they protested Wild Oats XI, who won line honors for the fifth time. The protest for failing to make the appropriate safety call-in was later dismissed after review of all the facts.
The Barcelona World Race skippers are set to go on their double-handed Open 60 circumnavigation tomorrow, As stated earlier, this event promises to be very interesting with the top Open 60 skippers and many new yachts on the start line. British Alex Thompson was absent from the media introduction yesterday as he was undergoing emergency surgery to remove his appendix; it is still unsure whether his yacht Hugo Boss will take the start with the rest of the fleet. The only North American skipper is USA's Ryan Breymaier who has joined forces with Germany's Boris Herrmann. Both skippers will race on Neutrogena Norwegian Formula, the former Veolia Environnement, the yacht Roland Jourdain and Jean-Luc Nélias sailed in the first edition of the Barcelona World Race. This regatta is the launch of both Hermann and Breymaier's IMOCA careers.
EXTRA SPACE DELETED
The location of the next America's Cup is still up in the air; the defender, Larry Ellison, is expected to make an announcement tomorrow as the December 31st deadline looms closer or face penalties under the Protocol.
