While the faster entry, Beau Geste , Karl Kwok's Farr 80, has set a new record of just over 66 hours, Diane Reid and Nick Sellars on One Girl Ocean Challenge were pleased to successfully complete the Bermuda Ocean Race. Diane is preparing to return to Annapolis single-handed, as part of her qualification for the 2011 Mini Transat. Sail safe, Diane!
Also on the East Coast, Speedboat has just crossed the finish line after the unusually slow 635 mile race from Newport to Bermuda. Many of the 183 yachts in the fleet are still scattered across the Gulf Stream in their effort to reach Bermuda.
After a relaxing week in Sydney, NS, it's off across the northern Atlantic for the Clipper Round the World fleet. They were set on their way by race founder and chairman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, who fired one of the Fortress of Louisbourg's replica eight pound cannons to start the 2,080-mile race to Kinsale, Cork, Ireland.
Offshore racing is definitely gaining popularity in Canada; over the next few weeks, we will see the start for the Route Halifax St-Pierre Ocean Race (http://www.routehalifaxsaintpierre.com/) on July 10th. 37 have already signed up, including Derek Hatfield in the ECO60 Spirit of Canada, to meet the challenges of the northeastern Atlantic ocean. On the west coast, the Victoria to Maui International Yacht Race (http://www.vicmaui.org/) is set to go on July 1st. The event will take racers over approximately 3200 miles from Vancouver Island to Maui Island, Hawaii.
Congratulations to Richard Clarke and Tyler Bjorn! Through consistent results, the Canadian team won the Bronze Medal at the recent Star European Championships, establishing themselves amongst the international Star class leaders. An accomplishment worthy of Canada's pride in sailing!
