All smiles in Rome - 34rd America's Cup First Press Conference - Russell Coutts and Vincenzo Onorato BMW Oracle Racing: Guilain Grenier
Welcome to Sail-World.com's New Zealand newsletter for 7 May 2010.
The first media conference for the 34th America's Cup was staged in the Sala Exedra in Rome's Musei Capitolini, surrounded by some of Italy's most precious treasures. Russell Coutts representing the defending Golden Gate Yacht
Club and Vincenzo Onorato on behalf of the Challenger of Record, mapped out the future of the America's Cup.
It's a future of consultation and collaboration.
The timeline has been set. The first designer meeting is in Valencia in two weeks, the whole deal is due to be wrapped up by Christmas and the entries close a month later.
But it's really up to the Challengers to make the first moves.
We have full coverage in this edition, including the details of the event as it unfolded live last night, New Zealand time.
We're also running full image galleries and analysis on the the announcement, and direction being taken by the Defender and Challenger.

Also in this issue we have Bob Fisher's comments on the Jennifer Watson PR debacle - which has detracted from her great effort in sailing 18,000 or 23,000 nautical miles solo and non-stop around the world. Whether or not you agree with teenagers taking off on circumnavigations, is another matter. It's a free world, and it's a lot better than seeing them go off to war. Now is the time to celebrate her achievement, and not pick over the errors of her PR team.
The TEAMORIGIN TP52, built by salthouse Boatbuilders will debut at the Audi MedCup next week. Ian Roman/TEAMORIGIN
Sail-World is pleased to welcome aboard the team at Salthouse Boatbuilders, in whose Greenhithe yard we spent many a cold winter working on the family yacht. Since their beginnings in 1965 Salthouse Boatbuilders have built every manner of craft from traditional wooden yachts and launches to the composite racers. The latest of their progeny, the TP52 TEAMORIGIN will make her debut in the Audi MedCup in Cascais, Portugal, next week - continuing an association with the British America's Cup team and Volvo Ocean Race winner, Mike Sanderson. In this edition we feature a profile on Salthouse Boatbuilders - with some great images of their creations - a must read!
The Bakewell-White 36, General Lee is launched in Auckland this morning.
Another yacht that has been attracting a lot of online attention is General Lee - built for two West Australian owners. Designed by Bakewell-White Yacht_ Design, she is a Cat 1 version of their earlier Alfesco. At 36ft she must be one of the smallest yachts to use a grinding pedestal! The twin wheels are also another practical deference to the big-boat background of her owners. In this edition we feature a photo gallery of General Lee. Her spars and rigging were by NZ Rigging.
Remember, if your event PR person is not yet sending news and images to Sail-World.com, please gently point out the submit banner on the top of the news on every single page on our site.
Sail-World tests the Weta - report next week!
Or, you can submit your event/regatta/class/boat news yourself by Clicking Here. Have a read of our contribution guidelines - if you suffer from writer's block - we've got the pointers to quickly get you through.
Many thanks for your help and input, we're here to help sailing, and help those who wish to help themselves.

Lies, Damn Lies, and PR Spin Bob Fisher, I stand in awe at the achievement of Jessica Watson. That one so young has had the fortitude to withstand the elements of the oceans alone and unaided for the 200 plus-day duration of a voyage through some of the most hostile waters on the planet, should be more than enough to warrant our appreciation of her seamanship and raw guts. This is no easy voyage. It is one whose demands would leave th... [more] Share this story
