There are probably plenty of sore heads and happy smiles in Valencia this morning after Larry Ellison's 90' trimaran, BMW Oracle, skippered by James Spithill, handed out a well-deserved thrashing to Ernesto Bertarelli's Team Alinghi.
After 30 months of remarkable behaviour which started with the creation of a fake yacht club to be the Challenger of Record for AC33, and continued with repeated attempts to bend the rules ever further in favour of the Defender (each one countered by BMW Oracle taking the matter to court), and even a “secret deal” with ISAF, Alinghi were beaten fair-and-square on the water – where they always said they wanted to be, but somehow seemed remarkably reluctant to go. And at the very end, the SNG representatives on the Committee Boat wouldn't handle the flags, so that RO Harold Bennett was obliged to draft in the Golden Gate YC observer and a chase boat driver (see Bob Fisher's story below).
James Spithill's performance at the wheel on the back beam of the trimaran was nothing short of breathtaking. Now we know what he has been doing for the last year or so – learning how to get that big beautiful beast up on to one hull and then keep her there, rock steady, as he steamed up the race course looking for all the world as it the boat was on rails. So well done, Jimmy. And well done also to the designers, manufacturers, sailors, management and everyone else in the BMW Oracle camp who made it happen. The transfer lists must be open once more – it'll be interesting to see how the Big Names re-group for AC34.
There will be a press conference today where the new Defender is expected to announce – at least - the Challenger of Record for the next America's Cup.
