Three crew were rescued from the 9.8 metre catamaran Catabatic, in the Auckland Tauranga race, yesterday afternoon. Designed by Roger Freckington the multihull issued a mayday call at around 1500hrs on Thursday afternoon in the vicinity of Channel island at the end of the outer Hauraki Gulf, Auckland. The Auckland Tauranga race got off to a fast start in Auckland this morning. Starting at 1000hrs off Westhaven the 60 strong fleet were propelled down the harbour by a 15kt westerly wind, causing the canting keelboats and others to gybe downwind as they sailed down the harbour. ...[more]

The first day of the regatta, and a first for the women in the new Platu 25 fleet was held today on the Waitemata Harbour, Auckland.
