Yesterday was a big day for Rowing, with the announcement of the staging of the 2010 World Championships at Lake Karapiro. This will bring about 800 to 1,000 international rowers to the Cambridge and Hamilton areas and will have a tremendous impact on these regions aside from the enthusiasm generated from a great world sporting event. ...[more]

The announcement this morning that Lake Karapiro is the preferred venue for the 2010 Rowing World Championships is tremendous news for the sport in New Zealand. It sets the scene for another great four years for Rowing, and will provide a boost for the sport that it hardly needs. ...[more]

In the Volvo Ocean Race the latest news is that the course has been shortened by some 70 miles to allow the fleet to make the next port, Rotterdam, in time for the In-Port race on Saturday. This is the first time in the Volvo OR and Whitbread RTW history that the course has been shortened or altered, and underlines just how much this event has changed since its inception as four leg adventure race around the world. ...[more]

The NZL Yachting Trust Auckland Suva Race fleet have had a tough time of it over the past two days with 30kt headwinds and four to six metre seas challenging the fleet. That’s 20ft waves in the old money, and is quite a pasting in any currency. ...[more]

Editorial: All eyes on Europe. By nzeditor@rowing-world.com, 8:42 PM Thu 1 Jun 2006
One of the interesting comments came from FISA Executive Director Matt Smith who believes the new progression system, using quarter finals, introduced at Munich, has made for much better racing. The view is that the system means that crews have to row four times to reach the finals and all arrive more or less equally fatigued. Is the answer to the Maadi question? ...[more]

Editorial: Taking Stock By nzeditor@sail-world.com, 12:44 PM Wed 24 May 2006
The transcripts of the two media conferences held overnight by the crews of movistar and ABN Amro Two make sombre reading. The comment that Hans Horrevoets was not wearing a life jacket or safety harness is not new, and was made by CEO of the Volvo Ocean Race, Glenn Bourke soon after the incident. Many sailing offshore at night have a more conservative approach to safety, and it will be interesting to see what transpires from the various inquiries that will be held. ...[more]

Editorial: Life at the Extreme By nzeditor@sail-world.com, Stanley Bay, NZL , 9:26 AM Mon 22 May 2006
The official sub-title for the Volvo Ocean Race 'Life at the Extreme' was certainly bought into stark relief over the weekend and overnight. Starting with the sad loss of a crewman from ABN Amro Two on Thursday, the fleet continued in a subdued fashion for some hours before moving back into race mode. ...[more]

There is plenty of action happening on the international sailing scene with Louis Vuitton Act 10 getting underway off Valencia, Spain and the first division having a relatively untroubled start to the regatta, scoring two wins apiece. In New York, Leg 7 of the Volvo Ocean race has got underway in the teeth of an Atlantic gale. Ericsson Racing is leading by a narrow margin and the fleet is closely bunched. ...[more]

Editorial: Spreading our wings. By nzeditor@rowing-world.com, 9:19 AM Mon 8 May 2006
We received some reaction to the Maadi Stats that were pasted last week, and are pleased to receive more. There will be another article on the effect of the progression system, first used at Maadi 2006, which will be featured in the next NZ Rowing magazine. Really the two sets of data need to be considered together to come to any real conclusions – however it is a big topic! ...[more]
