I got snookered one night when I confused a lighted buoy for a light structure. Both aids showed similar light characteristics and were within 100 yards of each other. As we proceeded south, we kept the flashing light ahead just off the starboard bow. Suddenly, our spotlight picked up the reflective tape of the light, 50 yards off the port bow! ...[more]

Checking your rigging
By Des Ryan,
9:28 AM Fri 22 Feb 2013
Just as they say the best fertiliser on a farm is the footsteps of the Farmer, so the best insurance for your mast is the eye of the skipper. This means regular checks before any major voyage. However, when it comes to a thorough check, the only way of ensuring you have found every fault is to remove the rig. ...[more]

Autopilots - about to get more 'intelligent'
By Raymarine/Sail-World Cruising,
11:40 AM Fri 15 Feb 2013
For the typical short-handed cruising sailor, the autopilot is often the third crew member, enabling the short-handed crew to be more places at once when necessary, relieving weariness and allowing more sleep for the off-watch crew member. Autopilots have their strengths and weaknesses, so it's good news that the technology which is coming soon will be making them more flexible and easier to use. ...[more]

Fire onboard!
By Nancy Knudsen, ,
8:37 AM Mon 11 Feb 2013
'Fire' is probably the most feared word on any boat, whether sail or power. It’s maybe even more frightening than taking on water with the dread of sinking. Power boats are perhaps more prone to fires - and the statistics tell us so - because of their use of petroleum as fuel. However, there are many other causes of fire. What can you do to mitigate the danger? ...[more]

It's not windjammer, it's Sunjammer! Humans learned long ago to push a craft across the water using the wind. Now the pace is picking up as space scientists learn how to push a craft through space using photons from the sun.
