Time to try for tuna
Tuna are being caught within a stones throw from Hobart.
Saltwater
Kingfish
Montagu Bay has been the number one spot over the last week for encounters with the Kingfish. North West Bay, Blackmans Bay and the East Coast have slowed a little, but it's still a good time to catch them.
Bream
Over the last week, the Bream in the Derwent have been fishing incredibly well. The average size has been a little lower than expected but the numbers are there. With the ABT Derwent Round held over the 18th - 19th March it will be fantastic to see both local and interstate anglers fish this first-class competition. There will be details in next week's report about where you can watch the weigh in.
Tuna
Storm Bay has started to fish well with both school Bluefin and Albacore Tuna caught. Dart Bank has been the hotspot. Pedra Branca has been producing good Bluefin to the 60-kilo mark, let's hope for good weather to get out there. The East Coast continues to be patchy at best.
Australian Salmon
Salmon have moved well and truly into most estuary systems from small specimens to two to three kilos.
Snapper
Betsy Island has started to produce the occasional larger sized Snapper, while smaller Pinkies have been caught throughout the Derwent system.
Calamari
There have been good reports of decent sized Calamari in the lower Derwent and Port Arthur.
Mackerel
Large schools have been sighted throughout most bays and estuaries along the East Coast of Tasmania for quite some time. They have been quite large and are a hugely underrated sports fish.
Flathead
Around Maria Island is fishing well and most anglers will be excited to hear we have fresh stocks of the much loved Jig-em's hopefully coming back into stock next week.
Freshwater
Arthur's Lake
By all reports, finally fishing well. Large mayfly hatches have been occurring of an evening with the Trout feeding vigorously on them. The quality of the Arthur's Lake fish has been quite good.
Great Lake
Drift spinning and trolling has been very effective over the last week, with the overcast and slightly cooler conditions. Early morning midge hatches have been widely reported.
Bronte Lagoon
Has started fishing well with reports of decent jassid hatches and cooler temperatures tempting the Trout into the shallower margins.
