2019 Melges 32 World League Event 3 at Fraglia Vela Riva - Day 1

by Melges World League 6 Jul 2019 10:02 UTC 5-7 July 2019

Mascalzone Latino by Vincenzo Onorato, helmed for this occasion by Filippo Pacinotti (with Branko Brcin calling tactics) signs the opening day of the third act Melges 32 World League on the race course of Riva del Garda.

Three races were completed today and since the very beginning the fight was open between the leaders at the top of the rankings, with continuous changes at the top, as it always happens in this highly balanced fleet.

The day starts with the success in race number 1 by the German entry La Pericolosa by Christian Schwoerer (with Nic Asher in tactics) which precedes Vitamina by Andrea Lacorte (with Jonathan McKee) and Mascalzone Latino on the finish line.

The second regatta sees the bullet of the Argentinian Donino of Luigi Giannattasio (with Manuel Weiller) that precedes Calvi Network of Carlo Alberini (Karlo Hmeljak on tactics) and Torpyone of Edoardo Lupi and Massimo Pessina (with Lorenzo Bressani). At the end of the second race, the new leader of the general ranking is Donino himself who takes advantage of the partial low scores of the direct rivals.

The top of the general ranking finds a new leader at the end of the third and final race of the day, in which Mascalzone Latino wins the race (preceding on the finish line Calvi Network and the holder of the Melges World League title Giogi by Matteo Balestrero) and goes to the command of the fleet after three races (9 points) with a single point of margin on Donino. Calvi Network (16), Giogi (17) and Torpyone (19) complete the provisional top five.

In the Corinthian division, the German entry Homanit of Kilian Holzapfel is the provisional leader (36) with nine lengths of margin compared to the first of his opponents, the British Barbarians of Stuart Simpson.

Tomorrow, the challenge for the victory of stage three of the Melges 32 World League continues at 1.00 and, as always, the show is assured.

The Melges World League is supported by Helly Hansen, North Sails, Tiirenia, Quantum Sails, Garmin Marine, La Thuile, Rocket Performance, Revi Trento Doc, Loison Pasticceri dal 1938, Rigoni di Asiago, Dai Dai, Norda, XPouf, Le Formiche di Fabio Vettori, boutique hotel Rifugio Azul (Minorca) and Rifugio hotel Lilla (La Thuile), One Ocean; the series is also supported by Team Partners UYN (thanks to Brontolo and G3Bau Sailing Team) l'Enoteca and Camarca Caffè thanks to Fra Martina Sailing Team.
