Leigh & Lowton Sailing Club Revett Series - Day 5

by Richard Catchpole 11 Dec 2017 07:44 PST 10 December 2017

The final day's racing in the Leigh & Lowton Revett Series on Sunday 10th December was impacted by a rough forecast of snow, sleet and high winds which discouraged competitors from making the trip to the club. In the end, the competitors that braved the weather enjoyed a great day's sailing, with 5-8 knots and only a flurry of snow on the finish line of the last race.

The race team of Paul Allen, Jude Allen and Martin Tubb have to be congratulated for surviving the biting easterly wind to set some fine courses in shifting winds.

Lasers

Charlotte Greenhalgh (LLSC) put together two bullets to wrap up the series, dominating the days racing and getting her hands on the Revett Trophy. Bill Busby (LLSC) continued to show us his light weather skills with a 2,2 while Paul Heath (LLSC) and Howard Green (LLSC) picked up the other podium places. Paul just did enough to squeeze Stuart Belfield (LLSC) down to 3rd place in the series by one point.

Handicap

Steve Blackburn and Ian Richie (LLSC) had the best of the day in their Enterprise with a 1,2 to clinch 3rd overall. Meanwhile the battle for the top 2 places went down the wire with a slip up by Martin Knott (Ribble) in the first race leaving the door ajar for Mike Banner and Mark Atherton (LLSC), but in the end Martin won the last race in some style in his Phantom to ensure the series was his.

Asymmetric

With the top 2 team sitting opting for sledging with the kids rather than racing, Richard Catchpole and Gary Coop (LLSC) made the most of the opportunity to score two bullets to take 3rd overall in the series. There was tight racing all day with all crews having their chance in the limelight during the race with Caroline Exley and Joe Hartigan (LLSC) winning out to capture 2,2 ahead of Mark Dingsdale and Vanessa Evens (LLSC). Chris Pickles and Mark Lunn (Delph) won the series with Dave Exley and Nigel Hall (LLSC) 2nd.

Solo

Malcolm Waddington (LLSC) shone through with a 1,2 to win the day and 2nd in the series, but the series had already been wrapped up by Brian Sprague (LLSC) with a weekend to spare. Great results (3,1) from Stuart van den Hoek (LLSC) meant that he just pipped Tom Welz for 3rd place overall on the last race of the series. This was a close-fought series and I am sure they will all be back again after the holidays for more!

Junior

Noe Peckham had already clinched the series with a week to spare but there was a full-on battle for 2nd and 3rd as Thomas Fielding-Link (LLSC) went toe-to-toe with John Bridgeman (LLSC). John got his nose in front by winning the first race, but Thomas fought back in the second to take the race and the series.

That completes the Revett series. The next racing is the New Year's Day pursuit race where 70-80 entries are normally expected, followed by the Junior Winter Regatta on Saturday 6th January. The Tipsy Icicle series kicks off on Sunday 7th January 2018 and runs through until the 11th March. All events are open to club sailors and visitors alike.
