Brits Beaumont & Darling take the lead
It was a very intense but excellent day today at Fraglia Vela Riva for the 74 crews from 14 nations taking part in the final leg of the 29er Eurocup. Once again it was a beautiful day of sunshine and wind that gave the perfect conditions for two races to be completed this morning (starting at 8:30), with northerly winds and a third race which was cancelled due to a sudden drop in the wind. By early afternoon, however, the race was made up thanks to the arrival of the customary southerly wind, which provided the conditions for the young sailors to complete another two races with winds of 10 knots.
This morning it was decided not to waste the precious wind conditions and to have the qualifications after the 5 races which concluded yesterday. So this morning the finals took place straight away with the fleet divided into gold and silver and the 37 top crews in the standings facing each other head to head.
With one day left of competition, the standings look pretty well-balanced, even if after today's four races the crews are further apart on points. Brits Beaumont-Darling jumped into the lead with a 6 point lead over Slovenians Janezic-Podlogar. Kotiranta-Kaskinen of Finland and Dehn-Toftehoej-Langballe of Denmark are fighting it out for third place and are tied on points. There's even a chance that Germans Lamay-Willim could reach the podium after starting well today with a 10-12, but were later penalised with a disqualification in the last race.
With the conclusion of the 29er Eurocup tomorrow, Fraglia Vela Riva winds up its racing season until next year when it opens with the classic Garda Optimist Meeting at Easter as well as with other events, some brand new, which will define our racing calendar in 2016. In the meantime our racing teams will carry on with their training and racing commitments.
