Bassweek Regatta at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club - Day 7

30 July - 7 August 2011
I said yesterday What will Friday bring? Well it brought more wind thank goodness! A relatively constant south westerly and, for once, it was a case of countering leeward heel rather than inducing it.
The morning’s activity was a single race for the respective fleets for their John Peel Tankard silverware. Over one hundred and twenty boats took to the water. The race was held in Dubwath Bay with two beats, and a mixture of runs and reaches. After days of mental concentration, this one got the muscles working again and the extended break for lunch in warm sunshine was welcomed by all.
The afternoon race was a more casual affair with three classes for Ladies, Juniors and Over 60’s. For two person boats this meant finding a partner of the appropriate gender and age and some interesting partnerships emerged. Of course, some were ineligible for any category and sat in front of the clubhouse to watch proceedings. Others were fortunate in that they could continue to sail single handed or to adopt their usual pairings.
A simple club course was set for the afternoon race with a committee boat finishing line used for the first time this week. All competitors started together on an extended start line but this didn’t stop the inevitable happening and a general recall was signalled!
Average lap times were used to determine positions and, after some ninety minutes, the shortened course flag was raised and each boat was given a finish as it crossed the line irrespective of the number of laps it had completed. But then there was the inevitable wait for corrected times to be worked out and positions confirmed.
Finally it was time for the third prizegiving of the week with a mixture of perpetual Trophies, glassware and bottles. This last, as The Lifeboat Silver Salver held yesterday was sponsored by Talisker. A computer glitch at Bass prevented the results being posted on line yesterday so they are included today instead.
